If I had believed in omens this would be a good day to think the weather we’re having today would be a sign of how it will be next year. The sun is shining and it is rather warm outside despite the fact that it actually is below 0C (32F). At least where the ever lasting wind doesn’t reach us 🙂 Perhaps it is the wrong day to see the coming weather though? They predict fog for the entire day tomorrow and even though I like fog I really don’t want it most parts of the year 🙂 I’m quite glad I don’t believe in omens 🙂
I got four rolls of film back yesterday, that I have had developed in another place than before. This one is placed in my old home town, actually in my old neighborhood 🙂 I’ll show You photos from those rolls today and the coming days. The photos You’ll see first comes from the old Zeiss Ikonta 531 and the Rolleicord. Perhaps I should open up a new page here showing what cameras I have? Then You could just open it up and see what the camera looks like and I can have some kind of description of how it works and what kind of film it must have. I’ll think about it.
Today I didn’t bring any digital camera with me, only the Zeiss one (that You’ll see photos from today). I have so many photos I can show now that I most likely won’t show especially many of those I would have taken today anyway. The sky had all kinds of different orange, pink and red colors this morning and the wind hadn’t started to blow yet so it was quite nice to be outside walking. Birds were singing but I couldn’t see a single deer or hog. We did however scare a Black Grouse hen and they sound so much while flying away that she scared us too 🙂
They told us that the entire country would be able to see the northern lights last night if the sky was clear so naturally almost 99% of the country had a cloudy sky 🙂 This happens every time we have a chance to see it down here in southern Sweden. They say we might have the chance again tonight so I guess we’ll have a cloudy sky again 🙂 It has actually already started to fly in clouds over us, thin ones who let the sunshine through but still. They are thick enough to not let us see any northern lights I’m afraid.
I better stop here because Nova wants to go outside again 🙂 I’ll bring one of the old cameras again I think 🙂
Have a great day!
The sun has shone all day and it has been just below 0C (32F) all day so it should have been a rather nice day to be outdoors really. The strong wind however has made it rather nasty instead. So I tried to walk as much in the forest as possible today which also meant I missed most of the sunshine but I didn’t at least not freeze. It will stay like this for a few days and it won’t calm down until the temperature drops later this week. It is predictions so who knows what it really will be like 🙂
I haven’t done much beside taking walks today, mostly I’ve been watching tv, lots of skiing downhill today and even if I’m not that interested it is nice to fall asleep to the cheering crowds 🙂 They have very little snow in the alps, I think we even might have much more here and we have around 5cm (2 inches) 🙂
I decided to use my old Nikon D70 today, I haven’t used it in over a year and the battery was totally discharged but it wasn’t dead. So as soon as the battery was charged I looked to see if there were any photos still left in it and yes there were 🙂 So today and perhaps the coming days You’ll see some photos from September last year 🙂 In some You’ll also see both Orvar and Hector 🙂
It is starting to get a bit chilly here in the kitchen so I better light a fire in the wood stove. I only have one and a half package of fire logs left so I might have to drive to town tomorrow to get some more. I could of course go out to the wood shed and cut some of the logs I have there and chop them in to big enough pieces but it is a tad chilly and it is so much nicer to stay indoors after all 🙂
Have a great day!
I was surprised to see in how good condition the first two thirds of the road to work was this morning and I was just as surprised to see in how bad shape the last third of the road was. For once they had actually scraped the road outside the village and I think they even had put out salt on it. The last third however was just the opposite. There were more cars on the road than I had expected and I never can understand those drivers who must drive up just a few yards behind my car and keep that distance all the way?
If they think I drive slow (which I actually didn’t, I had followed the speed limits all the way) why don’t they pass me? No instead they stay very close all the way filling the inside of my car with their lights so I can’t see anything and if I could have afforded it I would have slammed on the brakes. They would never have been able to stop in time, the only thing they could have done would be to drive out on the fields and got stuck there 🙂
I was planning on bringing a camera with me today and I had filled the Hasselblad camera with film and then I forgot to bring it with me, it was still standing on the kitchen counter when I left 🙂 I’ll bring it with me next time I go to town instead and that will be some time later this week. I didn’t even work half a day today, I had done what I needed to so I didn’t see the point in staying any longer. It was cloudy when I started to drive homewards but suddenly the sun appeared. Didn’t last long though because it started to snow after a while and then we had some drizzle before the sun shone again 🙂
It was much the same on our walk, some sunshine, some snowfall and even some drizzle and thankfully very little wind. I could see lots of tracks from the wild animals but I couldn’t see any from the lynx. The new snow had come too late in the day and the old one have a thick layer of ice on top so it could almost hold my weight. Lots of fox and hare foot prints though and some deer and wild hog too. I hope for luck tomorrow morning, it still snows on and off so it should be thick enough tomorrow to show some good foot prints.
They say it will stay cold and we’ll even get sunshine for three days according to predictions, I do hope that’s true. So it seems winter has come to stay because it will get really cold later in the week. It is time to make a pot of tea, I have the kettle on the wood stove so it is just a matter of minutes until it will start boiling.
Have a great day!
I woke up in the middle of a night from a stench so foul that it was impossible to breathe. My first thought was that it was one of the dogs having problems with the stomach. So I got up and started to look after te place I had to clean up. How wrong I was, it turns out it was one of the cats who had been in the litter box but hadn’t covered it afterwards. How on earth can a small cat create something so nasty smelling???? It was horrible to go in to the bathroom and clean it up, still he had no stomach problems what so ever, it just smelled that way 🙂 🙂
It hadn’t started to snow when we were up the first time but it had when we went up the second time.Well I don’t count what had started to fall yesterday evening because I don’t call that snow even if it technically most likely is called that. You know those tiny ice flakes you can see when we’re having frost? It was those that fell from the sky and it is quite beautiful when it happens but it doesn’t happen often and it is never a lot of it falling.
The wind was a bit stronger than I realised at first so we walked out on the fields and it didn’t take long until I couldn’t see anything through my glasses 🙂 I’m so glad that I now have a lens with autofocus because I couldn’t see a thing 🙂 So we walked to the creek where I knew the wind wouldn’t reach us. I had also brought the Hasselblad camera with me and it will be fun to see how those photos will look like. It has a very dark seeker and it is hard to focus as it is and today it was impossible 🙂 🙂
We passed the dead deer again and this time Nova showed a much bigger interest in it but thankfully she does what she’s told to do even if I could see that she wasn’t happy at all to have to leave this reeking wonder 🙂 I was totally covered in snow when we came home but the jacket wasn’t especially wet at all when it all melted away. I’ve hung it over a radiator though so it will feel warm when we’re going out again today. We’ll have snow almost all day but it will get warmer by the evening and then it’ll start to rain (at the moment however it sounds as if it in this snow also follows half icy marbles, we call it marble snow. It looks much like hail but is much softer, just like snow).
It will however start to freeze again just when I’m about to drive to work tomorrow morning and after that it looks like winter actually has arrived, it will stay colder for at least the rest of the week but it is just a prediction and those I don’t trust at all 🙂 It also says a lot of sun so that makes me even more sceptical 🙂 They show nothing of interest on tv unless I want to see the rerun of the absolute last episode of Downton Abbey. I watched it yesterday and I have liked these programs even though they have had very little to do with how it really was working and living in such a place. If You like this show You will like this last episode.
So instead I think I’ll watch a disaster movie on dvd. The weather all over the world says The Day After Tomorrow but I watched that not too long ago, so why not 2012 🙂 Otherwise I might just as well take a long nap and a nap is never wrong 🙂
Have a great day!
Weather predictions says we’ll get around 15cm (6 inches) of snow tomorrow and depending on how often one watch the updates it can either stay with a few degrees below freezing, melt away because it will be a few degrees above freezing or rain away some time tomorrow afternoon. After that it’ll get cold again so the roads can either be full of snow, clean from snow but very icy or perhaps both 🙂 🙂 I can’t guess what it might be because they still have plenty of time to change the predictions yet 🙂 🙂
Today however has stayed around 0C (32F), it might have been a degree warmer or colder but nothing noticeable. No frost though, I think the cold air came a bit too late for that and we have had it almost sunny for a while, we also had fog for a few minutes in the morning and I think it was those clouds that stopped us from seeing the sun when they rose in the air. I could see the clear blue sky north of here all day.
There’s a tradition amongst hunters to hunt on boxing day so I haven’t been able to walk in the forest the entire day. I heard the dog yapping a lot but I never heard anyone shoot so I guess they weren’t lucky. Some of them even left quite early but there are still some out there stopping me from walking around as I please. I must admit though that if it hadn’t been for them I would most likely have missed most of the fog so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much 🙂
The lynx is (are? usually we have a female here and the male tends to visit here next month or so) moving around here right now, my neighbor and I found a dead deer when we were out walking yesterday and the head was removed from the body, a typical thing for a lynx to do. The deer had most likely been there for some time because it had started ti smell, so I have to say I am surprised that Nova didn’t try to roll around on it, she just loves to smell awful 🙂 I do hope they don’t have any license to shoot lynx here.
So tomorrow You will most likely, or perhaps perhaps or not at all see snowy photos here, it all depends on which prediction comes closest to reality 🙂 You might or might not see frosty photos instead 🙂 One thing is certain though, there were no snowy photos today 🙂
Have a great day!
The wind blew so hard during the night that I woke up several times when the heavy rain hit my bedroom window. Today the wind has moved north and become even worse they say. The arctic winds will bring cold air so already tomorrow we’ll have below 0C (32F) and snow will start falling in the early Sunday morning. The wind seems to calm down by tomorrow but will be back when the snow starts to fall again, how nice.
The German custom of having a christmas tree, we call it yule spruce since most of us have a spruce (even if some rather have pines or even junipers instead) became popular rather late by the common people. The first ever recorded yule spruce was in an aristocratic home 1741 (Stora Sundby the place is called) but it didn’t became popular amongst the common people until around 1850’s. The first ones were usually very small and placed on a table or hung from the roof. Only the rich people could afford christmas baubles, others had perhaps apples in them and perhaps pine cones. The really poor couldn’t afford apples so there are examples of people wrapping colorful paper around potatoes to have as decorations.
But there was actually a custom in at least southern Sweden to have a yule tree, it could also be called yule apple and a few other local names I just can’t translate 🙂 Usually it was a crab apple tree (or bush would be more correct) dressed with apples or perhaps a spruce where all branches and twigs except for those in the top had been cut of. It could also just be a tree trunk where on had drilled holes and put in a certain amount of apple twigs. They never had candles in them though, only apples as decoration.
There was another thing called Yule tree and that was a candlestick in the shape of a tree, with both apples and candles in it and there was also something called Äpplstaken which looked like a Yule tree but with only apples in it. They could however not compete with a yule spruce so they became almost forgotten. They have made a sort of come back and here’s a link to the museum of Blekinge: Yule tree which show You a few more modern made ones. Just click on each photo and it will become bigger. Blekinge by the way is one of the most southern regions in this country and where most of my family comes from (even if I’m a 16th part Russian and a 1/4 Serb 🙂 ).
It is time to give the animals something to eat. We have only been outside once today, the wind and the heavy raining sort of forced us to stay indoors so one could think we would have lots of energy bit it is actually the opposite, we’re all really tired despite the long nap we had. I do hope tomorrow weather will be a bit better.
Have a good continuing of Yule!
I hadn’t planned to post any blog today since this is our big christmas day but I wanted to show what I found in my christmas present from Joyce 🙂
The weather is anything but christmas like but it could be worse. I read about the tornadoes in USA. We will get strong winds tonight but nothing compared to something like that. So I guess I should be happy with this weather after all 🙂
The most important tv program of the year, the 57 year old Disney christmas special they show here every year at the exact same time. Christmas hasn’t started until that program is shown and almost a third of the population in this country watch it 🙂 I’ll tell You more about it tomorrow if I remember to.
It is time to start eating some of all the christmas food I have, the sad thing is that I’m not really hungry 🙂 I grilled the ham this morning and it is delicious 🙂 and after that I started to eat some of the candy that came in the package from Joyce 🙂
Have a Good Yule!
The day started sunny and nice but now the rain pours down and the wind roars over the trees. For once these low pressures comes when it is dark and no one is outside anyway 🙂 I feel like going to bed really early just so tomorrow ill come faster and the yule vacation too 🙂 I need to write a list today so I can buy the last things I need for my yule dinner, or yulebord as we call it. I’ll start with the ham tomorrow so I can grill it on yule eve morning with eggs, mustard and bread crumbs.
I’ll buy the food in the grocery store in the village where I work, I want to wish all the employees a good yule. After that I’ll drive to Falköping to buy fire logs, they say we’ll get a few days with arctic winds after yule and I don’t want ton drive anywhere during my vacation if I don’t have to. I might bring a camera with me and take a few photos while I’m there, if I remember it tomorrow morning 🙂
All gnomes aren’t land bound, they have a relative that lives on ships. I assume they only live on tree ships but I guess that any ship with wood in them somewhere can have one. These gnomes Skepsnissar (ship gnomes, well I don’t know how to translate nisse so gnome it is 🙂 ) seems to follow the trees that have been cut down to build the ship. This can become a problem because sometimes more than one skeppsnisse comes with the timber. Gnomes aren’t very social to be honest so they would start fighting as soon as they found out that they weren’t the only one.
These fights could sometimes become so violent that the entire ship sank but one skipper once stopped such a fight by asking why they behaved like they did. The gnomes answered that they fought about who would remain as the ships guard. One of the gnomes said that he had guarded the timber they had used to make the keelson from so he therefore thought he would be the guard of the ship too. The skipper then said that he could be the guard of this ship but the other gnome would be the guard of the next ship would build and so the fight stopped. My thought on this is, what if another gnome followed the timber to the next ship? 🙂 🙂
It is time to make something to eat and this windy and rainy evening sort of demands me to have some hot cocoa too 🙂
Have a great day!
Only one and a half day left before the yule vacation starts 🙂 I will work on Monday the 28th but otherwise I won’t start working until Monday the 4th of January. This is the shortest yule vacation I’ve had in years, normally I wouldn’t have started to work until the 11th but we just have too much to do this winter and that is of course a good thing even if I’d rather be at home 🙂
If I look at the weather predictions on the net it says a cloudy but rain free yule even but if I look at the prediction on tv they say a sunny yule eve and it is the same company that makes the predictions 🙂 🙂 🙂 I guess that’s one way to at least get one prediction right 🙂
There are actually a few different kinds of gnomes here in Scandinavia. The one we think of firstly is of course the house gnome (or farm gnome) but there are at least two other kinds here, one who stays on ships Wooden ships of course, not metal ones) and then we have the Mill Man or the Stream Man. Scandinavia has lots of streams and they have often been used as a power source, especially for mills where they grinded flour.
Naturally a place like that has to have a gnome too and they live down at the wheel housing close to the water wheel. Like their relatives the house gnomes they help the miller to keep the order at the mill and make sure that the miller does his work at the right time. If for instance the miller gets the idea in his head that he should grind at night, the Mill Man stops the wheel from spinning because he is like the house gnome extremely strong.
The reasons to why he does this can vary naturally, he likes to have it quiet around him in the evenings because he is like the water sprite “Näcken” very good in playing the violin. Other times he might stop the wheel just because he is in a nasty mood. But one can make him happy again by either give him a sliver coin or some snuff (we call it snus) which is a tobacco product he really likes a lot. But it can also be because he feels lonely and want to have company, that is something the house gnome never would do, the house gnome accepts humans but really don’t like them.
Like house gnomes they are rather small and look like grumpy old men (they are only male, never female) but one can always recognise a Mill Man because there’s always something that shows he’s magic, like having an extremely long nose or perhaps only one eye in the forehead 🙂
It is time for some food and cocoa I think.
Have a great day!
We almost had sunshine today! It did shine through the clod that seemed to follow its path so well that it never managed to actually shine from above the cloud, just through it. The rest of the sky was clear blue for most of the morning but not where the sun was rising and this time of year the sun doesn’t rise especially high at all. Still we do have the chance of seeing it, they don’t see it at all in the most northern parts of this country now and won’t for several more weeks.
It is and has been warm all day though, we reached 11C (51,8F) as warmest so it did feel like we had an early spring day here. The birds didn’t sing though, a few tweets but that was it. They don’t even come to the bird food I’ve given them. I guess that since it is as warm as it is they still have plenty to eat as it is. It is only the ones living in my garden who comes to the food, like the House sparrows, the Great tit and the Blue tit. For once I’m not ruining me on bird food or deer food because the deers don’t come here either as long as the grass grows in the fields. I do have a sack with deer food tough just in case it would get colder again.
All the fish in my aquarium died over one night last winter if You remember I wrote about it and I think it was because one of the cats peed down into the water. So it has been empty since then but today I thought it was time to bring in the goldfish I have had in the big water barrels where I collect rain water. I have them there so they’ll eat all the mosquito and fly larvae that otherwise would thrive there. Twice the barrels have been almost deep frozen but I could see the fish move around in there so I knew they were alive. Goldfish are cold-water fish so as long as they don’t get deep frozen themselves cold weather is no problem for them.
They stop eating when the temperature drops below 10C (50F) in the water as they would do if they still would have lived in the wild. They wouldn’t start to eat again until the temperature would rise above that again, instead they would live on the fat they would have put on during the summer months. Still, I wanted to be sure they wouldn’t be deep frozen so I filled up the aquarium with cold water, went out and picked up all six of them and placed them in a bowl in the aquarium so that they would get the same temperature as it was in the aquarium. They would die of chock if I just put them down in a much warmer weather.
It is still not especially warm in the aquarium but the fish swims around and look like they are doing alright. I’ll put something above the holes where I give them food and where the electric wires to the filter goes down, those cats won’t get a chance to pee down in to the water again, ever 🙂 I had planned to place the aquarium in my cool cellar but I do like to see those colorful fishes in my living room.
It is time to give the animals their food and then I’ll return to my book. By the way, I have a few more photos in My National Geographic album that >I don’t think You’ve seen before. Just click on the red text here: National Geographic!
