Fantastic weather.

DSC_0020 (24)

This is one of those days when it is just too good weather to stay indoors and surf the net. It is actually a bit too warm but a strong wind takes care of that problem. It also keep most flies away, they started early this year but aren’t that many yet but still as annoying.

So I’ll come back tomorrow, they predict even warmer weather but we all know how good they are predicting the weather here in Sweden so it could just as well be icy cold, I don’t trust those meteorologists for a second πŸ™‚

It’ll be a lazy day.

DSC_0045 (13)

According to the weather sites it is raining here right now but as far as I can see through the windows it doesn’t. Showers are of course always hard to predict, it might in fact rain on the other side of my cottage without me knowing it. It is a fairly warm morning with a brisk breeze and high humidity and it could have been rather nice if the humidity had been lower. The more the day passes by the better the weather will be and the lower humidity will be as well.

My neighbors calves all look the same but the ones the castle has look al very different.

We walked down to the creek this morning and there was this rather big raptor up in the sky, normally they never come especially close but I was lucky today. I now know it is a Kite and I think it is a Red Kite which is rather rare here in Sweden. I did see a deer too and some Greylag geeseΒ but that was it when it comes to wildlife this morning. Of course I saw lots of small birds but they didn’t come close enough so I at least could try to identify them. I did however find lots of wildlife in Sune’s fur when we came home, I had to pick several ticks and I got all of them before they had bitten. They are now all dead πŸ™‚

I’m now taking the chance or risk that we won’t get any more frosty nights here so I am placing all the remaining potted plants I have in the cottage in the patio instead. The roof seems to make the place rather frost safe, unless it drops down to -7C (19,4F) or lower which isn’t unusual the last frost night here. It is like nature wants to show that we never can relax totally and just shows of that last frosty night πŸ™‚ So today I’ll take out the three passionfruit vines, the Lime tree and the last pelargonium. It is amazing how much more light I have in my home now πŸ™‚

I still have the last laundry to do but besides from that I’ll most likely have a lazy day today. I might start sowing some vegetables but then I need to weed the last part of my vegetable patch and the weather isn’t that nice yet. I’ll see if I do it later when the humidity is much lower. It will be a warm week ahead of us so I’m thinking of mostly making salads to bring to work. Like chicken salad one day, pork the other (much the same as the chicken one, I just put pork in it instead πŸ™‚ ) and so on.

We don’t have any sunshine but it is fairly warm and low humidity makes it feel even better. The weak wind just makes it more pleasant so I really can’t complain today. Well it would be about the flies then but to be honest, they aren’t as many as I feared. I guess I can thank the draught we’ve had for a while now. Living in a boggy area means the ground never really dries out too bad.

I was thinking that I would start chopping down my lilac hedge as soon as the flowers starts to wither but I can’t do that. I don’t know how many birds nests there are in there but one is enough for me to wait until Autumn comes and all small birds have flown away. One nest is so close to my gate that every time I walk out of my garden the chicks starts to scream for food πŸ™‚ I do hope it is too hard for my cats to reach it, Teodor is the one most interested in hunting birds but he is just too fat to even come close to the nest and I hope Bertil doesn’t care. He is however a master in hunting mice and voles and those I don’t care if he takes.

Today was a perfect day to mow the lawn and by the sound of it many neighbors thought the same thing. The more trees and bushes I plant the faster I mow the lawn πŸ™‚ My plan is to have so many bushes that I just have paths going around the entire garden so mowing will take even shorter time. The only problem with that is the cord since I have an electric mower. It will most likely get caught here and there but I see that as a minor problem.

I have two kinds of grape vines in my garden and they are amongst the hardiest and most pest resistant one can find. One is the American Frost grape (Vitis riparia) and the other the Asian Amur grape (Vitis amurensis). I have a problem with my frost grape though, it only produces male flowers so I never get any grapes but this year the amur grape flowers too so I have high hopes of at least get a few grapes this year πŸ™‚ I have sown more frost grape seeds though and if they germinate it’ll take around seven years until I get any flowers on those new vines πŸ™‚

I also found a small pot that I sowed something two years ago and two small plants are growing in it now, the problem is that the name tag is gone πŸ™‚ I’m not quite sure what is growing πŸ™‚ It might be a service berry but it could be something completely else too πŸ™‚ I’ll know when it is bigger I hope πŸ™‚ Do You remember when I told You two peonies had germinated and started to grow? One is dead and the other one doesn’t look too good, I’m afraid one of the cats walked on it but it is still green so I still have a tiny hope it will survive. If this had happened when it was two years old it would have survived but they are very vulnerableΒ the first summer.

It was quite pleasant outside this morning, around Β 8C (46,4F) and the birds sang as loud as they could. What is quite pleasant in the morning isn’t necessarily pleasant in the afternoon, it wasn’t much warmer when I came home from work. The clouds cover the sky but they are so thin here and there that the sun can shine through them every now and again. When it does wearing a fleece jacket is too much.

It is even more dry in the ground now after the thunder showers than it was before. So there isn’t especially many flies in the forest right now but down by the creek it was on the way to become nasty, they always want to look how my ears and nostrils look from inside and I really don’t like that πŸ™‚ The good thing was that they refused to leave that area so as soon as we walked away from the creek we were fly free.

It must have been during a very short time though because my tomato plants looks just as good as they did before. None of the weather sites had predicted this or even come anywhere near that low temperature, they all predicted 8C (46,4F). I wonder if I could have forced them to get me new tomato plants if they had died πŸ™‚ No idea to sue anything in this country, if one would win the best one can hope for is a “Good for You” and a tap on the shoulder. Yesterday was a horrible day at work, I don’t know how it was outside though. It might have been rather wonderful since the day was so warm but it was also mostly cloudy they said. I had the big luck to hand paint all day so the already hot factory was even for me since the air from the oven hit me all day. I don’t know how much water I drank but it was too little. I’ll have at least one Shagbark hickory growing here soon, I saw that one of the nuts now has cracked and a root is looking out πŸ™‚ I wouldn’t mind if the five or six other nuts do the same even though I only can have one in my garden. Well that is if the climate continues to give us short winters. They really don’t need to be warm but they do need to be short. The Black Walnut is slowly opening up its leafs and it is now almost six years old and perhaps 140cm (56 inches) high πŸ™‚ I feel that I might have a few trees that will grow a bit too high for my garden but at the time they will be that big I’m most likely dead and gone anyway πŸ™‚

Yesterday I brought a shovel to work and started digging in one of the forgotten gardens that belongs to the factory. I dug up four small hazelnut bushes, well bush is perhaps a bit much to call them yet but they will be one day. Β I did of course ask the factory owner first πŸ™‚ I still haven’t planted them because I don’t know exactly where I want them to grow, after all they will stay there for many years to come. So at the moment they are standing in plastic bags on the north side of my cottage.

He told me that on his property there are some trees he can’t identify, not even those working on the university can figure out what they are. It seems that a previous owner had an arboretum with lots of unusual trees. Unfortunately my boss didn’t know that and cut several of them down. Lucky enough some have spread to the forest which he also owns so not all trees are lost. By the way, do anyone of You know about a conifer with short needles that when cut gets bright orange wood? It fades a lot when it dries though. The bark is light in color and smooth.

I got a phone call at work today and at first I thought it was a telemarketer but the number looked odd for that, so I answered. It turns out it was a person from the department who decides about my sewer. She was in the neighborhood when they called her and said she should go to me, too bad they forgot to tell me though πŸ™‚ She just wanted an explanation on where I was planning on letting the water from the shower, dishwashing and shower out. It is finally over for this year :-)

DSC_0025 (11)

We’re having much the same weather here today as we had yesterday, no wind and perhaps a tiny bit warmer though. I have to admit that it’s quite nice even if I would prefer sunshine and warm weather. We haven’t gotten that much rain as they predicted though so we might still get a reasonable fly free summer πŸ™‚ I’ll get tired of it soon enough though.

I stood still for a moment to take a photo and the dogs were just beside me when I suddenly heard a loud crack in the forest beside me. I watched The Eurovision Song Contest yesterday night and it was quite ok. They had changed how they presented the votes this year. There are jutΒ΄ry groups in every country, people mostly working in the music business and then there’s the televoting. Both parts give the exacts same amount of votes but since they add together all televotes to one vote per song it looks much more when they present the televoting.

Australia won the jury group votes and it looked like nothing would be able to stop them from winning. The Russians won the televoting hugely but since they didn’t get that many votes from the Jury groups they “only” came third. The one winning it all when both groups were added were Ukraine! I just can’t understand how they could win, I’m sorry Ukraine but I just can’t πŸ™‚ Australia cameΒ second and we Swedes ended up as fifth. Now it’s finally over for this time but it’ll start all over again as soon as we pass in to 2017 πŸ™‚ I’ll post the top three songs at the bottom of this post.

I am however not sure I’ll keep this positive attitude towards the weather since the wind seems to get stronger. Today is a day that people allergic to pollen loves, the wet weather will make sure no pollen flies around in the air making their lives so much easier.I don’t want any frosty nights from now on, the cherry flowers can’t take any frost at all but apple flowers can still produce apples as long as they have been pollinated before the frost comes along.

Last summer, I think it was, I bought a little machine that makes ice cream. Well that is a lie to be honest. It is two bowls that you put in the freezer until they are deep frozen and one lid with an electric mixer which rotates very, very slow. One put the batter in the deep frozen bowl, put on the lid and start the mixer. After around 5 minutes there’s something very similar to ice cream, like soft ice cream. Ona can of course make real ice cream batter but for two bowls only (one bowl is like one portion) that’s just too much work.

So instead I filled the bowl with yoghurt and it works really good. I put in a variety called Samoan which contains peach, kiwi, mango, pineapple and passionfruit juice. Normally that yoghurt is a bit too sweet but when frozen this way it becomes a bit towards sour instead, just perfect! I also bought a yoghurt with vanilla, apples and cinnamon and I’ll try that one later today. I am rarely at home when the ice cream truck comes to the village and if I don’t bring a cool bag when I’m at the grocery store any ice cream will melt before I come home so this is a pretty good solution.

The day has so far been rather lovely, sunny and rather warm with a cool breeze. I can however see the cold front coming and it begins with thunder clouds. I had hopes of mowing the lawn today but the rumbling sounds grew bigger and the thunderclouds too so I think I’ll skip that today. There’s something with thunder and electric lawn mowers that sort of don’t go together if You understand how I mean πŸ™‚ The thunderstorm doesn’t move fast though so I will have an hour or two more before it moves in to my neighborhood. It might even miss us totally, the mountain has a tendency to get the thunder instead.

The second semi final of the Eurovision song contest is tonight and I do hope Australia will make it to the big final on Saturday. Our song is already there since we won last year. It is all pbs channels showing it in Europe so my guess is that it might be that in the US too. The Eurovision song contest starts tonight with the first semifinal. This year we are making it so big that countries with less budgets never will get a chance to even come close to what we’re doing. To be honest, the semifinals have fewer viewers but still in the intermission between the songs and the vote counting (tele-voting in all countries) Justin Timberlake will sing!I can’t stop wondering what they will have in the big final show on Saturday if he only sing in a semifinal?!

The stage and equipments are so heavy that the arena, Globen (the Globe, looks like a giant golf ball) now has sunken with 3,5 cm (1 2/3 of an inch) πŸ™‚ Even if we don’t know what songs will be in the big final (well six countries are there already, the five that pays most to the EBU and the winner from last year which is us this year), there are still favorites to win it all. The biggest one is Russia. I can’t say it is my favorite but it is good. The top five on the betting businesses are right now Russia, Ukraine (very odd song and it sounds like the singer sing one song and the band plays another πŸ™‚ ) Sweden, France and Australia. One problem when summer start this early is to keep calm in placing more sensitive plants outside too early. We can and often do get frost here the first week in June but already now nights are warm (Scandinavian warm that is). I would like to have my tomato plants, the two I have, outside already now. Nasty sharp that goes straight through the skin and are impossible to get out again πŸ™‚ It has those thorns both on the stems and the leafs πŸ™‚ I’ve heard the fruit is delicious so I just had to try and grow it, no matter how thorny it is πŸ™‚

Yesterday we reached at least 20C (68F), I say at least because when the sun hits the thermometer in the afternoon it shows almost tropical temperatures πŸ™‚ Today will be slightly warmer they say. I know this won’t last for long, after al it is just early in May yet but I will enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

We started walking towards the small lake like always on Saturday mornings. Soon that road will be cut of because it is a part of a big pasture. I could walk there alone since the cows only would be curious on me but they would most likely try to kill us all if I brought the dogs. I had just walked up the ridge when I thought Hell No! So we walked back rather quickly, jumped in to the car and off I drove.

We had almost reached my old home when I saw something by the side of the road.

I stopped the car, thankfully this happened on a place where I could be seen from a far distance, and started tophotograph him.

I really had no idea where I wanted to go, at first I was thinking of going to our biggest lake VΓ€nern but it is rather far so instead I drove to the place where I lived before moving to this cottage. You’ve seen photos from there before but mostly in autumn and winter I think. The forest is kept like it is a nature reserve even though it isn’t. That means that no trees are cut down and when a tree falls it stays where it has landed. If one is lucky they have at least cut it where the nature trail goes πŸ™‚ Or it can be like this morning, one is forced to walk in the more swampy areas and hope not to sink πŸ™‚

DSC_0047 (2)

The forest is very different from here because it is mostly deciduous trees but mixed with some spruces and pines. An even bigger difference is the bird song, it is so strong there that no other sounds can be heard, heavy spruce forests don’t invite that many birds to be honest. Not far from this little forest it’s possible to hear the Nightingale. I’m not sure I would call the song beautiful but it sure is very exotic in this part of the world.Β

After the walk we jumped in to the car again and I thought I should drive the smaller roads back home again. When we came to the village where I work I hoped that the grocery store would be open but I had forgotten how early we were out walking πŸ™‚ So we continued and passed my work place. There is this small road I can drive home on, at least during summer because it is a horror to meat anyone o that road during winter, there’s just no place for two cars to meet, especially if the road is slippery πŸ™‚

I must have missed the road where I was supposed to drive on because suddenly I was totally lost πŸ™‚ Well, that is a bit of a lie since I knew that I sooner or later would find a road I would know where it led. The only places I would end up at was the big highway, the road to work or the bog on the opposite side from where I live πŸ™‚ The roads are very narrow and winding so even though I saw places that I wanted to photograph I just couldn’t stop.

I decided to stop at the super market if I could find any parking lot in the shadows, after all I don’t want my dogs to die og heat stroke. So I ended up parking on the lots reserved for families with children. I was thinking that not many families would be out grocery shopping that early in the morning anyway πŸ™‚ I rushed in to the supermarket bought what I needed, except for bread which I really need πŸ™‚ and I also bought one soft ice cream for me and two sausages for the dogs πŸ™‚ They always look surprised when one asks for not fried or boiled sausages πŸ™‚ some places always believes one wants them cheaper πŸ™‚ The dogs enjoyed them and I enjoyed the ice cream πŸ™‚

I think I’ll have a small nap and after that we’ll take another walk and I do need to start thinking of mowing the lawn too, before it gets too warm.

I really can’t complain about the weather :-)

A bit chilly when we went out on our morning walk.

A bit chilly when we went out on our morning walk.

We did have frost here in the early morning but things changed pretty fast as soon as the thin see-through clouds that were up in the sky slightly blocking the sun had moved away. I sat in the kitchen and had breakfast as I saw two of my neighbors who had to work today drove away and smiled as I didn’t have to go myself πŸ™‚ The last time I looked at the thermometer we had reached 20C (68F) but it might have been much warmer πŸ™‚

I had hoped to see the fox this morning too but I couldn’t see it down by the field where it usually is, instead I saw two cranes which isn’t that bad either to be honest. They were very quiet this morning so I didn’t even hear how they flew above my head. Cranes are normally anything but quiet to be honest πŸ™‚

I got even more happy when Sune and Nova scared a squirrel who were looking for food on the ground. I wasn’t glad they scared it but it gave me a chance to see it properly when it climbed up the tree constantly scolding us for disturbing it πŸ™‚ The squirrels here are very shy and it is usually rather hard to find them. I guess they have more enemies here who wants to eat them, like the Marten. Long time since I saw a Marten here so I hope that’s the next animal we’ll see this weekend.

We could also with lots of luck get a chance to see a wolf since they have seen one several times in the neighborhood, well the next door county to be honest πŸ™‚ They say it is a young male looking for a new place to stay. No one here seems to mind wolves especially much, not even the hunters. My neighbor the farmer just put up more secure fences with extra electricity and wires in it. After all we already have lynx’s here so those new fences needed to be put up anyway.

I went to a garden center too today. I wanted to go to my favorite one but they didn’t sell the variety I needed, both hardy and one that will pollinate my neighbors plum tree. Instead I went to my former competitor to get what I wanted. It is a huge place and they always seems to have what one could want. For once I only bought what I needed but it was close πŸ™‚ I did find some other things I would like but they aren’t hardy enough to be honest so I’ll wait another year or two and hope the climate change will hep me get in to the right zone πŸ™‚

The morning is a bit chilly, we had below 0C (32F) this morning but since the sun shone and the wind was absent it felt rather nice anyway. According to the weather predictions we’ll have a cloud free sky so is anyone surprised if I say we do have clouds in the sky πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ They are thin though so the sun will be able to shine through.

We were out walking for over two hours and ended up by the bog where we so often go. Sune andΒ NovaΒ found sticks to chew and I sat on a tree stump listening to the birds singing. There were especially two birds from the same species I listened to, my guess is that one was a bit older than the other because his song was much more graceful, the other ne had on the other hand more power to his song. I wonder who would sound more attractive to the female birds?

The fox is getting used to us now. Today we stood and watched each other for quite some time until he went away. Nova and Sune didn’t care about him at all, they were more interested in eating deer and hare poop πŸ™‚ I guess that, if we meet him again this weekend, he won’t walk away at all. He is really far too busy to find food for the cubs so if he feels we’re no threat he will just ignore us instead.

It really is too chilly right now but I still have the kitchen door open. The dogs love it and the sun is heating up the wall so it won’t take long until it will start to feel warm in the kitchen too. The first dandelions have opened up in my lawn but the ones that will get pink flowers still have no buds. I had plenty of those plants last year but then both Orvar and Hector found most of them πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Only a few that I had put in pots survived πŸ™‚

I think summer arrived today, a bit early I admit that but it sure feels like it πŸ™‚ I really can’t say how warm it has been here at home since the thermometer, placed on the north side of the cottage now is hit by the sun both when it rise and long before it sets. They day started rather wonderful too, the first thing I see when I get to the car is a newborn calf in the pasture next to my cottage πŸ™‚

The day has passed slow though, I did what I could to get outside during the day. I didn’t have to change colors especially often and we had enough with people so I could walk around as I pleased more or less πŸ™‚ They forgot to deliver the food I had ordered from the restaurant so I had to wait for them to deliver it. I didn’t mind a lot because I sat outside in the sunshine while waiting πŸ™‚ It is so strange, the food they deliver earlier in the day usually taste nothing but when I get it late directly from the restaurant it is delicious! They say it is made at the same time but I just can’t believe them.

I wore a fleece jacket when we took our walk after work and it was too much πŸ™‚ we went out to the bog and I heard a Black Grousse playing, the roosters tend to forget that all hen now are busy with the eggs or perhaps even chickens now πŸ™‚ Sune took his usual bath in the clean creek and NovaΒ rolled around in the dry grass. It almost felt sad when we went homewards again but we all needed something to eat πŸ™‚
