Deer.

Last post here, tomorrow I’ll be at the new place!

Not long till the sweet cherries are ripe now. I hope I can get some so I can sow the kernels because these grow on a tree which is less than 1,5m (much the same in yards) high and this tree is rather old so it won't be any higher.

I didn’t wake up even once during the night πŸ™‚ One could therefore presume that I would be fully rested but that would be too good wouldn’t it πŸ™‚ I do however feel much better now so with a little luck I’ll be fine this last working week before my vacation starts. This will be one of the longest weeks in the year as it is even without this nasty cold hanging around.

The morning was truly wonderful, 8C (46,4F), sunshine and a weak breeze keeping those few flies, that was thinking of annoying me, hiding in the bushes. Very few birds sing now, to be honest I think I only heard one or perhaps two. Could have been the same bird just moving a bit. We walked in to the village, it’s been a while since we did that and it looked like it always does πŸ™‚ I was enjoying the morning so much that I mostly forgot to take any photos πŸ™‚ Still I took plenty yesterday so no shortage of photos today.

We barely made it home until the first clouds arrived and the weak breeze became much stronger. It is still rather nice outside but the wind is a bit too strong to have the kitchen door open. Thunder and showers are predicted to arrive around noonish but the weather will be rather pleasant both before and after it has passed. Most important is that the humidity won’t be sky-high any time today.

Do You remember that I bought ten Dahlia’s for almost nothing at all because they had passed their best before selling date? I soaked them in luke warm water for 24 hours and then planted them in pots. I now have eleven since one root fell in to pieces so I got several plants from that one. The problem was that I didn’t know where to put them when they started to grow but the cats helped me with that πŸ™‚ Do You remember that I sowed melon seeds? I planted those in a big wooden box and the cats found the brown soil to be rather pleasant to sleep on and while doing that they also killed the melon plants πŸ™‚

We bumped in to this lady yesterday and we all got just as surprised. I told her to stand still so I could get some nice photos and she obliged :-) The grass is so high that she had to jum away but she did so very slowly and in no panic.

I know have planted some of the Dahlia’s in that box and put up sticks here and there so tha cats won’t use it again πŸ™‚ I also planted the rest in my old wheelbarrow, another place the cats slept and killed the plants. If You plants Dahlia roots and it only gives one stalk per root it’s possible to get many flowers anyway. Just cut off the top of the stalk above a pair of leafs and it will start to produce new branches which will give plenty of flowers, somewhat smaller perhaps but lots of them.

One can also take cuttings and plant those to get more plants and they’ll all give new roots that You can plant next summer. Many believe that if one sows Dahlia seeds those won’t be able to survive a winter to be planted the next year but that’s wrong, they’ll be just as good as the ones one buy or perhaps even better. Very few Dahlia species are hardy enough to survive in the more northern hemisphere though so they must be storedΒ in a cool but frost-free space during our winters in buckets with moist sand or soil.

The coughing comes and goes and I’m quite happy if it only comes around while I’m awake. I did get one full night of sleep last night but the one before was the nastiest I’ve had. I’m not sure I slept at all and could have been a danger on the road to work if something had surprised me. So I’m glad that it was this morning when the doe and her young one decided to walk out on the road just in front of my car.

I managed to stop in time and could only laugh when I saw the youngling trying to walk on asphalt, it looked like it was the first time it tried to walk at all πŸ™‚ They really can’t get a good grip on that hard surface. Another animal had not had the same luck during the night, the big road was covered in blood and there were so much of it that it must either have been a wild hog or a moose hit by a lorry. We’re having a chilly, windy but mostly sunny morning here. It is sweater weather even if one walks in shelter of the wind but kind of nice anyway. It is however not that nice that I’ll keep the kitchen door open for more than a few seconds. I got a phone call at work today and at first I thought it was a telemarketer but the number looked odd for that, so I answered. She was in the neighborhood when they called her and said she should go to me, too bad they forgot to tell me though πŸ™‚ She just wanted an explanation on where I was planning on letting the water from the shower, dishwashing and shower out. We’re having much the same weather here today as we had yesterday, no wind and perhaps a tiny bit warmer though. I have to admit that it’s quite nice even if I would prefer sunshine and warm weather. We haven’t gotten that much rain as they predicted though so we might still get a reasonable fly free summer πŸ™‚ I’ll get tired of it soon enough though.

I stood still for a moment to take a photo and the dogs were just beside me when I suddenly heard a loud crack in the forest beside me. I watched The Eurovision Song Contest yesterday night and it was quite ok. They had changed how they presented the votes this year. There are jutΒ΄ry groups in every country, people mostly working in the music business and then there’s the televoting. The old village school works as a cafΓ© this time of year.

Lots of birds nest at the factory and most of them crap on our cars (I have to say that it is rare that they crap on my car though). Seagull nest on the roof and Barn Swallows and doves nest beneath a big roof where we have materials we’ll paint. So now they have done what they can to prevent the Barn swallows to nest beneath the roof but I’m not sure they are successful, they don’t seem to care about the doves that much though. The Seagulls however is something they fight with a rabid energy.

Last year they actually managed to scare the gulls (they put them up after the younglings had fled the nest) but we’re not so sure they’ll work this year. The gulls are there watching the kites and they are very intelligent so I think it won’t take long until they figure out that those hawk like things never leave a certain area. They had finally made the roads rather good after the last snow fall when it suddenly started to snow again. Now it starts to get colder so I have no high hopes of good roads tomorrow morning. I do hope the boots I ordered have arrived by then but Β it won’t be slippery on the roads if it get that cold anyway. Ice gets a rough surface if the temperature drop below -10C (14F) and the deep snow we walked in on Sunday is less high because lots melted these two warm days, I will most likely be able to walk on the icy crust when it gets that cold. I think I’ll buy more deer food even if they haven’t come here yet to eat what I’ve put out. I think they feel Β trapped here because they have put up new fences outside my garden, sheep fences. They are pretty high and there are six electric cables going parallel around the pasture. No wolf walks through that without learning that it is very painful.

The deer will be pretty desperate if they can’t kick through the snow to get to the grass they want so I’m pretty sure they will turn up again as soon as it gets nasty cold in two days. Photos with this motive is something You’ll see a lot of. It isn’t easy to remember what photos I took before when I’m not using the camera every day. I really need to start taking notes about each and every photo I’m taking πŸ™‚

I’ve filled the bird feeders, put up a small carpet where the opening to the dog house is and started the radiator so it will be warm and nice on Monday when I’ll go to work. I used big nails so that it will be hard for the dogs to tear it away. They will eventually do that anyway but I have at least triedΒ my best πŸ™‚ Later in the afternoon I’ll put out some deer food too, the snow has an icy crust which can be hard for the small deers to get rid of to reach the grass beneath. That usually means they’ll come to our gardens instead.

The remaining photos comes from the Edixa.

It is the exact same kind of film in both the Nikon and Edixa but it shows clearly how much older the Edixa is because that camera need so much more light to give good photos.

Have a great day!

I think this photo was unintentional and I think the creek is down there somewhere :-)

The weathermen seems to be a bit unsure :-)

I took this photo yesterday evening.

I took this photo yesterday evening.

Weather predictions says we’ll get around 15cm (6 inches) of snow tomorrow Β and depending on how often one watch the updates it can either stay with a few degrees below freezing, melt away because it will be a few degrees above freezing or rain away some time tomorrow afternoon. After that it’ll get cold again so the roads can either be full of snow, clean from snow but very icy or perhaps both πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I can’t guess what it might be because they still have plenty of time to change the predictions yet πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

But these four were taken this morning just before the sun was about toi rise. I posted a fifth in my NG album.

It looked like a big orange in the sky πŸ™‚

Today however has stayed around 0C (32F), it might have been a degree warmer or colder but nothing noticeable. No frost though, I think the cold air came a bit too late for that and we have had it almost sunny for a while, we also had fog for a few minutes in the morning and I think it was those clouds that stopped us from seeing the sun when they rose in the air. I could see the clear blue sky north of here all day.

It was difficult to see that the sun just was about to rise behind the mountain.

This is the smoke from my neighbors cottage and not fog :-)

There’s a tradition amongst hunters to hunt on boxing day so I haven’t been able to walk in the forest the entire day. I heard the dog yapping a lot but I never heard anyone shoot so I guess they weren’t lucky. Some of them even left quite early but there are still some out there stopping me from walking around as I please. I must admit though that if it hadn’t been for them I would most likely have missed most of the fog so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much πŸ™‚

The lynx is (are? usually we have a female here and the male tends to visit here next month or so) Β movingΒ around here right now, my neighbor and I found a dead deer when we were out walking yesterday and the head was removed from the body, a typical thing for a lynx to do. The deer hadΒ most likely been there for some time because it had started ti smell, so I have to say I am surprised that Nova didn’t try to roll around on it, she just loves to smell awful πŸ™‚ I do hope they don’t have any license to shoot lynx here.

So tomorrow You will most likely, or perhaps perhaps or not at all see snowy photos here, it all depends on which prediction comes closest to reality πŸ™‚ You might or might not see frosty photos instead πŸ™‚ One thing is certain though, there were no snowy photos today πŸ™‚
