Spring.

I really can’t complain about the weather :-)

A bit chilly when we went out on our morning walk.

A bit chilly when we went out on our morning walk.

We did have frost here in the early morning but things changed pretty fast as soon as the thin see-through clouds that were up in the sky slightly blocking the sun had moved away. I sat in the kitchen and had breakfast as I saw two of my neighbors who had to work today drove away and smiled as I didn’t have to go myself πŸ™‚ The last time I looked at the thermometer we had reached 20C (68F) but it might have been much warmer πŸ™‚

I had hoped to see the fox this morning too but I couldn’t see it down by the field where it usually is, instead I saw two cranes which isn’t that bad either to be honest. They were very quiet this morning so I didn’t even hear how they flew above my head. Cranes are normally anything but quiet to be honest πŸ™‚

I got even more happy when Sune and Nova scared a squirrel who were looking for food on the ground. I wasn’t glad they scared it but it gave me a chance to see it properly when it climbed up the tree constantly scolding us for disturbing it πŸ™‚ The squirrels here are very shy and it is usually rather hard to find them. I guess they have more enemies here who wants to eat them, like the Marten. Long time since I saw a Marten here so I hope that’s the next animal we’ll see this weekend.

We could also with lots of luck get a chance to see a wolf since they have seen one several times in the neighborhood, well the next door county to be honest πŸ™‚ They say it is a young male looking for a new place to stay. No one here seems to mind wolves especially much, not even the hunters. My neighbor the farmer just put up more secure fences with extra electricity and wires in it. After all we already have lynx’s here so those new fences needed to be put up anyway.

I went to a garden center too today. I wanted to go to my favorite one but they didn’t sell the variety I needed, both hardy and one that will pollinate my neighbors plum tree. Instead I went to my former competitor to get what I wanted. It is a huge place and they always seems to have what one could want. For once I only bought what I needed but it was close πŸ™‚ I did find some other things I would like but they aren’t hardy enough to be honest so I’ll wait another year or two and hope the climate change will hep me get in to the right zone πŸ™‚

The morning is a bit chilly, we had below 0C (32F) this morning but since the sun shone and the wind was absent it felt rather nice anyway. According to the weather predictions we’ll have a cloud free sky so is anyone surprised if I say we do have clouds in the sky πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ They are thin though so the sun will be able to shine through.

We were out walking for over two hours and ended up by the bog where we so often go. Sune andΒ NovaΒ found sticks to chew and I sat on a tree stump listening to the birds singing. There were especially two birds from the same species I listened to, my guess is that one was a bit older than the other because his song was much more graceful, the other ne had on the other hand more power to his song. I wonder who would sound more attractive to the female birds?

The fox is getting used to us now. Today we stood and watched each other for quite some time until he went away. Nova and Sune didn’t care about him at all, they were more interested in eating deer and hare poop πŸ™‚ I guess that, if we meet him again this weekend, he won’t walk away at all. He is really far too busy to find food for the cubs so if he feels we’re no threat he will just ignore us instead.

It really is too chilly right now but I still have the kitchen door open. The dogs love it and the sun is heating up the wall so it won’t take long until it will start to feel warm in the kitchen too. The first dandelions have opened up in my lawn but the ones that will get pink flowers still have no buds. I had plenty of those plants last year but then both Orvar and Hector found most of them πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Only a few that I had put in pots survived πŸ™‚

I think summer arrived today, a bit early I admit that but it sure feels like it πŸ™‚ I really can’t say how warm it has been here at home since the thermometer, placed on the north side of the cottage now is hit by the sun both when it rise and long before it sets. The day has passed slow though, I did what I could to get outside during the day. I didn’t have to change colors especially often and we had enough with people so I could walk around as I pleased more or less πŸ™‚ They forgot to deliver the food I had ordered from the restaurant so I had to wait for them to deliver it. I didn’t mind a lot because I sat outside in the sunshine while waiting πŸ™‚ It is so strange, the food they deliver earlier in the day usually taste nothing but when I get it late directly from the restaurant it is delicious! They say it is made at the same time but I just can’t believe them.

Tulipa tarda. It is actually behaving like a weed in my garden but a rather pleasant one.

Yesterday changed totally after I had written the blog and turned out to be the best day so far this year, a bit windy every now and again but sunny and warm. We were out most of the day and I repotted the last indoor plants I have but I still need to repot some small trees I have outside. I’ll bring most of them to the plant swapping day in late summer.

We also played a lot in the garden i between walks and I did some weeding as well. When most people think of weeds they think of crab grass in the American continent, we over here think of quick root, another grass. Thistles and nettles are also some plants that pop up in our minds. Here I also often thing Black currants, raspberries and gooseberries πŸ™‚ I find new small plants all over my garden every year.

The raspberries I just pull up but I tend to plant the gooseberries and currants in small pots and there they are for a year or two till I can find a spot to plant them πŸ™‚ The ones I find in the garden are usually sown by birds who ate my berries but we do have wild currants growing in this country, both black and red. The wild ones have smaller and fewer berries but they tend to be delicious, especially the gooseberries. Wild raspberries are also much tastier than the garden varieties, the best berries in the world closely followed by the wild strawberries.

I never mowed the lawn though, I thought the grass was short enough to wait until the coming weekend. It is warm now though and will be all week long they say so I guess it will grow like crazy πŸ™‚ I’ll survive because I have a long weekend this week so I can mow it in parts during several days if I so wish πŸ™‚ I’ll go to a garden center on Friday I think. I’ll buy a plum tree. I promised my neighbor that I would so their little plum tree will give plums too now when their little daughter is growing up. Some plum trees are sold as self fertile and if one is happy with three or four plums a year that’s right but it is always best to have another variety close, one that can fertilize the tree one has because like apples not all trees can do that.

There were two too my big surprise.

DSC_0040

It didn’t look especially nice outside when I looked through the windows, a bit dark and dreary to be honest. I have to say it was actually quite nice when we were out walking even if it was around 0C (32F) but since there is no wind at all it is quite pleasant outside. Ok the humidity is sky-high but I can take that when it is a bit chilly.

Beside the bird song not a sound could be heard. I had hoped to see a badger today but they always seem to have gone back to bed when we’re out walking. After that we walked in to a deer, she didn’t care much about us. She just stood there watching us pass by and then she continued to grace as if nothing had happened. We also saw a couple of Greylag geese flying above us and those were rare here back in those days.

We didn’t go far until I saw a fox. I tried to get as close as possible and at the same time tried to tell a more or less deaf dog to come closer to me without alerting it πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Nova just kept on walking like always so we didn’t get as close as I had hoped but I did get a few photographs of it anyway. To my big surprise another fox turned up when the first one ran away, so both mother and father fox were out hunting, that must mean the pups are big enough to be left alone now.

Playing fox cubs are the cutest thing there is and I once hired a summer cottage a bit north. There was a small village with two grocery stores! nearby (today it is surprising if a village has anything at all to be honest) and I had decided to walk to one of the grocery stores to get a few things I needed. On my way back to the cottage I suddenly saw five small fox cubs playing on the gravel road. The clouds are getting thinner and my aunt in Gothenburg just texted me that they have sunshine and 20C (68F) in the sun at 8:30 in the morning. So that’s what I am waiting for right now. I don’t trust our weather predictions but they sound pretty nice at the moment, sunshine the entire next week and they think we might reach 20C (68F) in the shadows by the end of next weekend, that would be nice especially since I have a long weekend then. Ascension day is on Thursday and it is a holiday here and I’ve taken Friday off πŸ™‚

It is supposed to be raining here right now, it doesn’t. I’m not complaining, just saying that they haven’t been quite accurate in their predictions πŸ™‚ They also predicted, when I checked this morning, that we wouldn’t get any sunshine today, we did πŸ™‚ It is a low pressure that gives them problems with their predictions, they just can’t figure out how fast it will move eastwards.

The day has so far been rather nice with slightly higher temperatures than predicted too. A strong wind does its best to destroy the feeling of spring but it has failed miserable, the wind is nicely warm but so strong that my cottage is trembling and squeaking when the gusts hit. That doesn’t happen often, normally the wind can’t reach my home. Still, it is rather nice outside and we’ve been on walks two times already and after this we’ll go out again, if the rain actually doesn’t come.

I stood outside when I repotted my pelargoniums (some of You english speaking call them geraniums), it turned out to be rather practical since all the dry and loose soil flew away with the wind πŸ™‚ I also repotted an old Flowering Maple (Abutilon and we actually have the same name on it in Swedish). It didn’t look too happy and I hope it survives. I have taken cuttings from it before and took a few today as well. Today all photos comes from two old cameras. The first ones comes from an Agfa Ambi silette. A rangefinder camera often called the poor mans Leica. I only have one lens and it is a 135mm telephoto lens.

It hailed heavilyΒ yesterday evening and since temperatures were low all night lots of it covered my car when I woke up this morning. Thankfully the sun showed for a minute or two so it was easy to get rid of before going to work. I think I had driven for five minutes when the snow started to fall. Even I had to admit to myself that it looked pretty but I was a bit worried since I now have summer tires on my car.

The pretty feeling soon vanished because the longer I drove the more it snowed πŸ™‚ At one point it was so hard to see the road that I thought it would be best to stop and slowly drive home again. The road was however so warm that the snow melted as soon as it hit so I continued to work. Just as I arrived the snow stopped falling and I could see some sunshine again. It lasted until I was about to go to the neighbor factory to work, just before I was leaving the snow started to fall again. So even if it is just 200 meters (much the same in yards) to the other place I took the car πŸ™‚

Nothing worked as it should today πŸ™‚ It took quite some time until I even could start working. Something must have been wrong with the paint because it was looking like cement and nothing I did made it better πŸ™‚ I had painted for a while when it suddenly felt like something was tapping me on my head, strange since I was the only one there. So I turned around and saw that the hose from the paint pump had broken and it sprayed me all over my back πŸ™‚ I wear an overall that won’t let any paint through so that didn’t bother me that much.

The worst thing was that everything was covered in paint and my gloves got slippery and it took almost half an hour to fix the hose. I hadn’t worked for long when something else hit me in the back of my head, this time it was the hose for the compressed air that broke πŸ™‚ It just took twenty minutes to fix that hose so I could start working again. I don’t have any clock in there so every now and again I must check the clock in my mobile phone. Guess what? The zipper broke on my overall!!!

The rest of the photos comes from an old camera called Balda Jubilette. It is a viewfinder camera so one has to estimate the distance to the thing one wants to photograph. I am surprised over how good this camera was. It does seem that I have a light leak in it somewhere that I must find.

I can’t even be in the paintbox if that is broken and it would take too long to go back to my ordinary workplace to get a new overall so I had to go outside, now without any snow falling but with a strong wind instead. I did manage to fix it, at least so I could continue to work. I’ll bring another one next time I’ll go there, on Thursday they say. It took me twice as long to paint what I should today and I’m so glad that the day is over. From now on it only can be better.

It is time to eat something and after that I’ll sit in front of the tv being grumpy all evening πŸ™‚

Have a great day!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

I woke up to a world covered in snow and I didn’t like it. The night had started rather cold and it had dropped down to -7C (19,4F) before the clouds came and covered the sky. It was less cold when I woke up but the sight of all that snow made me cold inside instead.

I could see that the sun was trying to break through though so out we went and I did have hope that the sun would show while we were out walking. How wrong I was, even though the clouds did get thinner no sun showed. Instead the snow started to fall again but since there was almost no wind it actually didn’t feel that bad anyway. I can even say that I would have liked it if this had been around Christmas πŸ™‚

None of the weather sites had predicted anything else than rain so snow was not even something I have remotely considered to see. It all melts down pretty fast though so even if we just had a shower of pebble snow (looks like hail but is soft and very light) it can’t be seen on the ground any longer. I’m not sure I’m glad I changed to summer tires even if the law says we must but this is April and weather can change in a minute.

I did mow the lawn yesterday and even though I knew the grass had been growing quite a lot I still got surprised over how much grass the collector collected. I had to empty it several times, perhaps a good thing since it most likely insulated the compost against the really cold night. I normally just let the mowed grass stay on the lawn, it gives back the nutrition to the poor sandy soil I have.

It is time for a pot of tea and after that another walk I think, I do hope it won’t snow any more now.
