High humidity, cloudy sky and warmish isn’t that nice to be walking in to be honest, it is the high humidity that sort of dampens the joy of being out walking. The weak wind there is doesn’t help much but the humidity has already sunken quite dramatically so it does feel better when sitting here in the kitchen with the door open. The clouds are thick but every now and again there’s a tiny rip in them allowing the sunshine to hit the ground for a few seconds at a time.
No rain is predicted for today so the grass might get a chance to dry up and I a chance to mow it. They predict some sunshine for tomorrow though so I guess I’ll get the chance then if I can’t do it today. To be honest, the predictions change just as much as always so it might end up with a hurricane instead 🙂 I won’t complain too much as long as we don’t get frosty nights, I’ve started to bring plants outside for the summer so frosty nights are a no-no from now on.
We walked in some high and wet grass this morning and that is tick paradise. I picked over twenty crawling ticks from both dogs and a few that already was sitting there drinking blood. Nast creatures and they aren’t even especially popular amongst animals as food. Most birds avoid them so it seems they are here on this planet top spread diseases and death. I guess that’s important for nature too, there would be too many animals around otherwise but I still can’t pretend to think ticks are something we really need 🙂
The worlds biggest half marathon takes place today in my old home town. 64 000 people have signed up to participate! I did it once and that was quite enough for me 🙂 They have a good weather to run that far today, not too hot or too cold. There is always some people who do this that really shouldn’t and heart attacks aren’t uncommon amongst them. Even worse are damaged knees or other joints though. The Beekeeper usually run but I did see his car here this morning so perhaps he doesn’t this year.
It is time for a pot of tea before I do anything else today. Sune is sleeping on the kitchen stairs, there’s some sunlight hitting it at the moment and Nova does the same in the living room, I would like to do the same but I know I’ll sleep for too long so I think I’ll skip it 🙂
Have a great day!
It is a cold but sunny morning here and we were out walking as soon as the sun started to rise above the horizon. The frost cover wasn’t as thick that I had thought, the below freezing degrees started already yesterday evening. The absence of wind made it much nicer that it was to be honest.
The rain they had predicted for today is now moved to Sunday, that means I’ll have to mow the lawn no matter if I want to or not 🙂 If I wait another week the grass will be so long that my mower won’t manage to cut it and who knows if we’ll have sunshine next week, they are wobbly enough to predict the weather just a day ahead so just imagine how bad it is when they try to do it for a week 🙂
I shouldn’t have slept that long yesterday even if I most likely needed it. I had problems falling asleep and I woke up just after 4 am too but I did feel relaxed so it was a good sleep the little I got. I can’t say we have daylight already at that time now but it sure shows that the day is close. Today the sun went up at 5:32 am and soon we won’t have much night at all here and further north they won’t have it at all since the sun will stay above the horizon 24/7.
Lots of birds are singing and we heard a deer warn about something with is odd barking but we didn’t see any other animals today. We walked to the clean creek but it was even too cold for Sune to take a bath today, I even saw some ice at the edges of the water. Mist “pillars” were rising by the little lake and according to folklore that’s fairies dancing before the day starts. Fairies are actually quite nasty beings, they love to give children diseases and they might even kill them if they want to.
The wind has started to blow some so I guess the grass soon will have dried up enough for me to mow it. I better check all the electric cords so they still work, I had problems with one of them last summer if memory serves me right. I think I’ll have time for a pot of tea before mowing though 🙂
Have a great day!
The bog ladies had had a chilly and wet night so I can understand that they had had many fires burning during the night 🙂
It is actually quite nice outside even if the sun isn’t shining and the occasional rain drop falls down. It is slightly above 10C (50F) at the moment and the little wind that’s there is just nice. I wouldn’t mind if the cracks in the clouds were a bit bigger but we can’t get it all, can we 🙂
I had hoped that I would be able to mow the lawn today, not because I like it but it is soon a bit too long but it is still so wet that my mower just would clog up totally. Most of the Wood anemones have buds now, I have a few different ones like the Yellow one but also a few different of the white one. Soon I’ll see white, blue, green and white with a blue eye flowering in my woodland.
I have a few plants in my cool cellar and I’m thinking of bringing them up so I can turn off the greenhouse lamp down there, it eats energy but is great for the plants. The problem is that if we get a setback how well can I cover them, they already have leafs. I’ll place them on the patio close to the cottage wall and that usually keep the frost away. The sunshine however, if we get some that is, is the biggest problem. Just like us plants need to adjust to it so they don’t get burned.
Tomorrow will be cold and rainy they say so perhaps I should wait with picking up those plants. This is the time of year when weather can change within minutes, one minute it’s sunny and warm and the next snow can fall.
It is time to have a pot of tea and after that we’ll take another walk.
Have a great day!
We had such wonderful weather on Monday and Tuesday that it just was impossible to stay indoors for any longer time. Today isn’t that bad either but it is cloudy and has been for most of the day.
Still, birds are singing and farmers are plowing their fields, they have also put manure everywhere so it smells rather bad in some places 🙂 Most of it is now plowed down though, they all want to finish the job before the rain starts falling, something the predictions still debate over when that actually is happening 🙂
It is time to get something to eat, all the animals have already gotten their food but Nova decided to not have hers this evening. She does like that sometimes and I have no idea why. I guess she’s hoping I’ll drop something of what I’m having but I’ll be extra careful today 🙂
Have a great day!
It was a tad chilly here this morning, only 1,5C (34,7F) but the sunshine didn’t have many clouds to fight its way through so it did feel warmer than it actually was. On tv they said we might have a big chance to see the sun today, on the web however we didn’t have any chances to see the sun and it is the same forecast business saying both 🙂 I guess the chances of getting it right gets bigger if they have different forecasts in different places 🙂
We walked to the little lake and the birds were singing like crazy. There wasn’t a single crane by the lake but I could see some ducks and two Trumpet swans (or as we call them Song swans). Lots of ravens in the air too and I do wish they for once could sit down close so I could get a good photo of anyone of them. That only happens when I’m driving it seems and then it is impossible to stop. Just a week ago a big raven sat down on a high tree stump just beside the road and the sun was reflected in some of its otherwise pitch black feathers, it looked magnificent.
We also walked out to the bog but no sight of any moose this morning and it was so chilly that not even Sune wanted to take a bath in the creek 🙂 I could see the dogs breaths in the air and I wonder if it might have been colder out there than elsewhere, it sure feels like it many times but that could be the ever-present dampness which give that feeling.
It’s so fun because I just checked the latest forecast on the Swedish website and now it suddenly shows that we’ll most likely see the sun the entire day, at least between the clouds that might pass 🙂 I feel that I have chosen the wrong career 🙂 I think I would get it right just as many times as they do just by using a deck of cards and giving the different cards different meaning 🙂
I feel that it is time to take another walk and after that a short nap would be great. I really need to replant some potted plants today and also start looking for places in my garden where I can plant some flowering quinces I once sowed. No rush with the latter though, spring is still young to be honest.
Have a great day!
So far the day has been a bit chillier than yesterday, we even had some thin fog for a while but now the sun seems to break through the clouds and it feels warmer as soon as it does. We had a light rainfall during the night so everything smelled so nice this morning and it did help my seeds to get a good start. I know we’ll have setbacks but as long as they aren’t too cold the seeds will do fine, after all it is Scandinavian wildflowers so they should manage the climate.
I passed the lake when I drove to town this morning, I think there were only 50 or so caravans left so I guess lots of cranes have moved north now. There were still around 15 600 cranes left by the lake but many of the ones with caravans follow specific cranes all the way to their nesting places in Norway. I wonder if they can follow them by GPS? After all, how easy can it be so see which cranes is which otherwise 🙂
My neighbor from the farm up the slope asked me if I had seen our new neighbors. I was a bit confused until he told me that every day a bunch of cranes were walking not far from our homes, I can actually see them from mt home 🙂 To be honest, I haven’t even looked around here, I thought it was a bit too noisy with tractors driving around spreading manure now. I’ll look out later today to see if they are there or if they only are here in the morning.
Tomorrow I’ll work like normal again. I have had two rather wonderful days and I wish I could have taken the entire week. Well I could have but I’ll be needing five days around christmastime, christmas is mostly over a weekend this year so it’s best to have some days vacation left so I at least get one week off.
It is time to give the animals what they want, food. I’ll have some as well I think.
Have a great day!
We can actually see the sun today, it is a round shiny disk behind the clouds 🙂 but I must admit that it is quite nice outside. Almost no wind and reasonable warm as well. The starlings have arrived and I think they are one of my favorite birds just because their song is so full of all kinds of sounds. We had one coming here for several years and it sounded like a cuckoo clock 🙂 Today one sat in the top of a spruce and it had a really exotic sound to its song.
We walked to the little lake in the forest this morning, as we have done every Saturday morning for several weeks. It is so nice to walk in that somewhat old forest and who knows for how long it will stay, all trees here are more or less the same age so when they start cutting down the trees in one part of the forest the rest of the trees will follow pretty soon I’m afraid. Today I had no big hopes of seeing any cranes, I’ve realised we get there just too early, it seems all cranes first fly to the big lake to eat, they put out food there every day now and when they’ve done that they spread over the entire area.
There were a few duck in the lake but nothing more when we arrived. I stood there for a while just enjoying all the sounds and trying to see what ducks it was. The dogs got bored quite fast but since I could hear how some cranes were flying around I wanted to stay a few more minutes. Suddenly one arrived. It sailed down almost soundless. I thought it was going to land on the north-western bank but it turned in the air and followed the open water for a while until it landed in the reed. Now I understand why I couldn’t see the cranes last week, they totally disappear when they walk in to the reed.
We have also walked to our part of the bog and today Bertil followed us out there. He wasn’t totally happy about us going out there and I think wild hogs were close, I could hear them yesterday evening very close to the beekeepers cottage. They are surprisingly noisy to be honest. I really wanted to take a photo of Bertil with one of my old cameras but he just refused to look towards me and I really didn’t want a photo of his behind only 🙂 So to get his attention I tossed away a twig, not big in any way. I’m quite useless when it comes to aiming but of all times today was the day I was good at it 🙂
Isn’t it typical, for once he actually listened to me and turned around just as the twig fell down and hit him in the head. I’m pretty sure I won’t see him until tonight again, he was pretty angry and who can blame him 🙂 I took a tour in my garden when we came home and to my big surprise I saw that the garden was more alive than I could have thought. The crocus flowers and so does the lungwort, The deep blue Hepaticas are in bloom too and there are still a few snowdrops looking beautiful. I could even to my even bigger surprise see a few chionodoxa’s with big buds. I have a few in my garden but they really don’t like it there but today I found a few new ones where the water barrel stands 🙂
It is time to make a pot of tea and after that I think it is time to take a nap.
Have a great day!
This could have been a rather wonderful morning if it wasn’t for the wind, strong and cold. If one can find a spot where it doesn’t reach though it’s quite nice. At the moment if sounds as if it reaches every corner og my cottage, so staying indoors feels like a good choice to make today. The predictions are actually right about the wind so I hope they are right about the temperature too because it will rise above 14C (57,2F).
I had planned to clean up in the garden today and to be honest, the wind would help me get rid of it all. I wouldn’t have to do much but toss it up in the air and gone it would be 🙂 It is just too cold in the wind though so I’ll save it for another day when the wind has calmed down and I’ll have to carry it away myself 🙂 The weeds and grass have grown very well this winter since it has been so warm.
We walked to the little lake again this morning and this time I did hear some cranes there but I just couldn’t find any when we arrived, rather irritating 🙂 Lots of them flew above our heads though. There are now around 15 000 cranes by the big lake and more will arrive before most of them have moved to Norway. The ones staying in Sweden rest by other lakes (well of course the ones staying in this neighborhood rests by this lake too 🙂 ).
I have now started the new place when this don’t have any more space. I still have around 400MB to use so the move won’t take place for another month or so, it all depends on how many photos I put in here. The continuing is called “The Cottage by the Cranelake. Still we have hope.” (click on the red text and a new window will open up to the new home of the cottage). I am however not sure if I’ll keep how it looks, the bright white background for the text can be difficult for those having problems with their eyesight. I’ll see if I can change that to something less bright. There are other backgrounds but yesterday I couldn’t find anyone I liked.
I’ll see if there’s anything worth watching on tv. The weather look so inviting but the sound of the roaring wind tells me it isn’t especially nice out there. Well I can always take a nap 🙂
Have a great day!
We started our walk just as early today as we did yesterday but instead of going to the lake in the bog we walked to the lake in the forest. I thought it must have thawed that much so I would be able to see open water and perhaps some cranes too. The open water guess was right but there wasn’t a single crane there this morning, instead I saw three Mallards. I did manage to photograph them but to be honest, they are so tiny in the photo that it is hard to say whether they are birds or branches floating in the water 🙂
I didn’t put on a sweater to have beneath the jacket which I was very happy that I didn’t. It was below freezing when we started but the sun warmed up so good that it would have been too hot after just a short while. We came home after an hour and a half but the weather was just too good so we only had something to eat before we headed out again. We walked out on the bog where we usually walk and even if it was rather warm already then the bog was just enough frozen to carry me most of the time.
The cranes out there could easily be heard and I didn’t want to disturb them so I kept our distance all the time. Unfortunately I could hear the cars going to the big lake the whole time, I guess there are more people than cranes there now. Yesterday they counted 3800 cranes and by the sound of the traffic there must have been more than three times the amount of humans 🙂 I’ll go there next week instead so I can take a few photos to show You. I think I’ll go there early on Good Friday perhaps even before the people in the caravans go outside and it will be easier to get a parking space too if I go early.
They put up parking meters everywhere around the lake this time of year and the money goes to feeding all the birds. 25 000 cranes and I don’t know how many geese, swans and ducks there are sure eats a lot 🙂 so we all pay the fee without complaining. As soon as the cranes have moved north (these flies to Norway) the meters are gone again packed away to get used next year again. I better make sure I have enough with coins, it costs around 20 Swedish kronor (around $ 2,2 US) to park an entire day there.
I just did the last of the laundry when we came home and then we went out again. This walk was however a bit shorter and only took half an hour. I just checked the thermometer and it is 11C (51,8F) outside right now, not bad considering the predictions were much lower. The snowdrops are still the only flowers in bloom but the lungwort will open up any day now if it stays above freezing during the day. Also both Scilla and tulips have started to show above the ground now. I planted the Shagbark nuts I’ve had in the refrigerator all winter in pots and placed them outside by the north heading wall so no sunlight can reach the pots. They all look just fine so I hope that at least some will germinate. The black walnut has survived the winter without any damages at all, it is now six or seven years old and perhaps 1,2 meters high (around 6,3 feet).
It is time to feed all the animals and after that I think I’ll have something myself too.
Have a great day!
The weather has been more or less the same today as it was yesterday by slighty more chilly and the humidity makes it even less nice outside. The spring warm weather as they almost screamed out should come and stay for at least a week never did, now they say it will come tomorrow and maybe stay two days 🙂 They really just should stay quiet and never say anything more until they actually learn how to do their job. After all, they have been bragging about their new very advanced computer, one of the most advanced there is 🙂 🙂 🙂
The roads had already started to thaw when we were going homewards againI had planned on going to the lake i the bog again today but I skipped that and walked to the small lake in the forest instead. I could hear cranes, geese and trumpet swans, not many yet but many enough to actually saying spring is just around the corner, for at least two days 🙂 The roads had already started to thaw on our way homewards again so we were all rather muddy when we reached the cottage. We walked in the cow pastures later in the day just to avoid as much of the mud as possible.
I’ve done my chores, the laundry, vacuuming and scrubbing the floors and now I’m thinking of shaving off my hair again. It is so long now that the powder paint tends to stuck on the scalp and when it does it starts to itch and then the dandruff starts. It doesn’t matter how well I wash my hair, it still stays there and since we now will get two days of spring this may be the best day to do it.
Yesterday evening we had the big finale in the Swedish part of the Eurovision song contest and the winner is a 17-year-old boy with the song If I were sorry. It was well liked by both us Swedes and the international juries Swedish television always have (so we Swedes don’t chose the wrong song 🙂 ). I do like the song but it is a bit too much like another song written and sung by an American called Matt Simon and his song is called Catch and release. I’ll post both songs at the bottom so You can decide for Your selves if it is a copy that won here. My personal view is that it is but it was allowed to compete so I guess EBU (the European Broadcasting Union) thought different. It was my favorite song so I don’t care 🙂
The fun thing is that lots of countries think we make this contest soo good that they want to see it live too, so yesterday three other countries watched it live, they sais Iceland, Estonia and a third country I didn’t hear which it was looked at it live (they could of course not televote like us Swedes though.
It is time to give all the animals something to eat and after that I’ll have something myself.
Have a great day!
