The village.

Last post here, tomorrow I’ll be at the new place!

Not long till the sweet cherries are ripe now. I hope I can get some so I can sow the kernels because these grow on a tree which is less than 1,5m (much the same in yards) high and this tree is rather old so it won't be any higher.

I didn’t wake up even once during the night πŸ™‚ One could therefore presume that I would be fully rested but that would be too good wouldn’t it πŸ™‚ I do however feel much better now so with a little luck I’ll be fine this last working week before my vacation starts. This will be one of the longest weeks in the year as it is even without this nasty cold hanging around.

The morning was truly wonderful, 8C (46,4F), sunshine and a weak breeze keeping those few flies, that was thinking of annoying me, hiding in the bushes. Very few birds sing now, to be honest I think I only heard one or perhaps two. Could have been the same bird just moving a bit. We walked in to the village, it’s been a while since we did that and it looked like it always does πŸ™‚ I was enjoying the morning so much that I mostly forgot to take any photos πŸ™‚ Still I took plenty yesterday so no shortage of photos today.

We barely made it home until the first clouds arrived and the weak breeze became much stronger. It is still rather nice outside but the wind is a bit too strong to have the kitchen door open. Thunder and showers are predicted to arrive around noonish but the weather will be rather pleasant both before and after it has passed. Most important is that the humidity won’t be sky-high any time today.

Do You remember that I bought ten Dahlia’s for almost nothing at all because they had passed their best before selling date? I soaked them in luke warm water for 24 hours and then planted them in pots. I now have eleven since one root fell in to pieces so I got several plants from that one. The problem was that I didn’t know where to put them when they started to grow but the cats helped me with that πŸ™‚ Do You remember that I sowed melon seeds? I planted those in a big wooden box and the cats found the brown soil to be rather pleasant to sleep on and while doing that they also killed the melon plants πŸ™‚

We bumped in to this lady yesterday and we all got just as surprised. I told her to stand still so I could get some nice photos and she obliged :-) The grass is so high that she had to jum away but she did so very slowly and in no panic.

I know have planted some of the Dahlia’s in that box and put up sticks here and there so tha cats won’t use it again πŸ™‚ I also planted the rest in my old wheelbarrow, another place the cats slept and killed the plants. If You plants Dahlia roots and it only gives one stalk per root it’s possible to get many flowers anyway. Just cut off the top of the stalk above a pair of leafs and it will start to produce new branches which will give plenty of flowers, somewhat smaller perhaps but lots of them.

One can also take cuttings and plant those to get more plants and they’ll all give new roots that You can plant next summer. Many believe that if one sows Dahlia seeds those won’t be able to survive a winter to be planted the next year but that’s wrong, they’ll be just as good as the ones one buy or perhaps even better. Very few Dahlia species are hardy enough to survive in the more northern hemisphere though so they must be storedΒ in a cool but frost-free space during our winters in buckets with moist sand or soil.

We’ve had much the same weather today as we had yesterday but the clouds were slightly thicker so the bright disk, the one we call the sun was a bit weaker. I think the wind was even weaker than yesterday, the wind power plants didn’t move much at all and most of them didn’t move at all. Almost 15C (59F) and that’s not bad this early in April.

We’ve been away almost all day, my dogs and I but I don’t think much happened here in the village during our absence, nothing much ever happens here to be honest. The only exception is when a villager blew up his garage unintentionally two years ago πŸ™‚ The garage was around a mile away and I stood in the shower on the opposite side of my cottage when I suddenly were tossed towards the wall πŸ™‚ He also had fireworks in that garage and they blew off every now and again all day long πŸ™‚

Normally I would sit here and think that the weekend is just too short and we shouldn’t have to work more than four days a week but today I don’t care, I had two days of vacation I didn’t use last year so I’ll take them tomorrow and on Tuesday. I could have saved them if I wanted to but as I said at work, I don’t know when I might hit a moose on my way to work and get hit in the head by its hooves and die and I really don’t like to have vacation days that IΒ haven’t spent left when I die πŸ™‚ The new vacation year started two days ago so I still have 25 days to spend this year πŸ™‚

My Hasselblad camera is a so-called medium format camera, the film is bigger than those to a slr camera. Medium format cameras give totally square photos and one can only take twelve photos on each film roll. For a reason I don’t know it’s much more expensive to develop those films even if it is exactly the same film as the 135 films (but bigger then), so they use the same chemicals. That’s why I use my Hasselblad camera so seldom. Instead I’ve used the Zeiss more often, it use the same kind of film but instead of totally square photos it takes slightly less wide photos so I can get 16 photos from each roll of film. I hope You can follow what I mean πŸ™‚

The film to my Hasselblad is loaded in a special cassette which when it is loaded is attached to the camera body. One day I learned that they have made film cassettes which gives the same size on the negatives as on the Zeiss camera so I can take 16 photos with my Hasselblad too! I found one on our eBay (which we call Tradera) and won the auction fairly easy. I tried to get some info about it on the net but it seems medium format fanatics doesn’t like it, the negatives should be square and that’s it πŸ™‚ I’m not a fanatic so I thought it was great and today I started using that cassette πŸ™‚ I do prefer to take many photos for less money if I can πŸ™‚

So anyway, it was quite pleasant when we started our walk, a weak wind and I could see rips in the sky showing a blue heaven. It changed quickly though and soon the snow started to fall. I have to admit that I didn’t notice it much as long as we were walking in the forest but on our way back it snowed so much sometimes that it was hard to see any longer distances. Still, the flakes are mostly small so it takes some time until it becomes especially much on the ground.

I normally take photos of this tree with its funguses but closer to the ground. I'm walking on the ridge around 15 meters (much the same in yards) up and could take a closer look at the top of the old tree. There are a few funguses gowing even higher.

So a new year begins but I really can’t see any difference. It is a bit warmer than I had expected and we never got any fog as they had predicted, it is more like a slightly thicker haze to be honest. The snow is melting since it is above 0C (32F) but the melting water just freeze when it covers the road, so the road does look as if it is glazed with glass.

It was an adventure to walk in to the village because I think it would have been smarted to wear ice skates than rubber boots πŸ™‚ It looked as if there was a safe piece to walk on in the middle of the road but there wasn’t. The gravel was just as slippery there as it was elsewhere, so I mostly walked in the ditches all the way round πŸ™‚ It was so much better when I walked out to the fields instead where only a few tractors had been driving and the snow just melted without freezing to ice again.

The weathermen seems to be a bit unsure :-)

I took this photo yesterday evening.

I took this photo yesterday evening.

Weather predictions says we’ll get around 15cm (6 inches) of snow tomorrow Β and depending on how often one watch the updates it can either stay with a few degrees below freezing, melt away because it will be a few degrees above freezing or rain away some time tomorrow afternoon. After that it’ll get cold again so the roads can either be full of snow, clean from snow but very icy or perhaps both πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I can’t guess what it might be because they still have plenty of time to change the predictions yet πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

But these four were taken this morning just before the sun was about toi rise. I posted a fifth in my NG album.

Today however has stayed around 0C (32F), it might have been a degree warmer or colder but nothing noticeable. No frost though, I think the cold air came a bit too late for that and we have had it almost sunny for a while, we also had fog for a few minutes in the morning and I think it was those clouds that stopped us from seeing the sun when they rose in the air. I could see the clear blue sky north of here all day.

There’s a tradition amongst hunters to hunt on boxing day so I haven’t been able to walk in the forest the entire day. I heard the dog yapping a lot but I never heard anyone shoot so I guess they weren’t lucky. Some of them even left quite early but there are still some out there stopping me from walking around as I please. I don’t know why the sky turned out this blue in the photo because it was definitely dark grey.

The day has been rather dark and gloomy and the promised fog did arrive, on the other side of the valley. I think I can say valley because on one side it’s the big mountain and I live on the other side and the ground is slightly lower down in between. Still, the mountain peak is 200 meters (219 yards) higher up than this village is. So here I could see the fog clearly but we got as best some thick haze on this side.

We’ve almost reached 10C (50F) today, so it was a bit too warm to wear a winter jacket but still a bit to chilly to only wear a sweater, it could have been sweater weather if it hadn’t been for the wind. I can’t feel much of here around the cottage but as soon as I walk up the slope I live at the bottom of the wind hits and it gets a bit chilly. No such problem in the forest though so I should just have left the jacket at home.

One of the beings we have in our folklore and one I don’t think many know about is the Spiritus, I know I didn’t know anything about it when I grew up. The Spiritus (also called Spertus) came from hell and could bring wealth and success to its owner. So if a person knew a lot of black magic he could “easily” get one. One way was to tie a human leg on a hook, go to a creek and fish there for three nights in a row and on the third night the ugly little creature, much looking like an insect most of the times would follow the leg up out of the water.

DSC_0039 (1)

DSC_0041 (1)

DSC_0042 (1)

Another way was to brood a roosters egg in the arm pit, according to legends here roosters lay one egg every year. Personally I doubt that though πŸ™‚ Anyway, when the egg hatched it would be a Spiritus that crawled out of it. The Spiritus lived in a beautiful carved box and the only thing the owner had to do was to feed it with a big spit each morning but it had to be a spit on an empty stomach (the owner could not even drink any water). If he forgot to do it while having an empty stomach the Spiritus would go back to hell and punish the former owner severely.

DSC_0045 (1)

DSC_0048

DSC_0050

The owner would have a good life with lots of money as long as the spiritus lived and it was best not to be too greedy and keep it for too long, because if the Spiritus died the owner would follow it to hell. It could however be sold two times and it was important to know that because the third owner would have no chance to avoid hell since he couldn’t sell the being. So when the third owner was about to die the Spiritus would leave its box and place itself on the chest of the owner and in that way claim him as his own and to hell. The two previous owners however would still have a chance to get in to heaven.

Have a great day!

You better have slaughtered Your pig today.

DSC_0022

Today is a big day here in Sweden because today we celebrate the catholic saint Lucia, a rather odd tradition since we have been a strictly Lutheran protestant nation since the middle of the 1500’s. The tradition became popular amongst the common people around 1920 but it had been celebrated more or less the same way aristocratic families since the 1700’s. So all over this country they’ve had Lucia processions where they sing yule songs and we usually have coffee, tea or julmust and eat gingerbread and a bun we call Lussekatt. Lussekatt is a wheat bun usually spiced with cardamom, saffron and sometimes raisins. Here’s a link to different videos of our LuciatΓ₯g.

DSC_0025

DSC_0027

DSC_0035

But we’ve had a tradition to celebrate this day since way in to the middle ages. Back then December 13th was when we had the winter solstice so that was when the night was as longest and all the beings were as strongest. It was the start of the Yule and it was best for everyone if all chores for yule had been done by then, like the slaughter of the pig for example. If one hadn’t done all chores there was a risk that Lussi, a female demon being (well here in southern Sweden it was a male one instead), would pay a visit to the home. She would punish the family who wasn’t ready to celebrate yule properly.

She would also come down the chimney and take children who hadn’t behaved good and those children would never be seen again. But all beings were extra powerful this long night, so people would stay at home and very few would sleep at all that night, one never knew if a troll would try to get in to the home. Trolls could swap their children to a human one ( I guess it was because they thought humans had better homes and wanted the best for their children) and that could be a big problem since troll kids never could behave properly πŸ™‚ One could think that humansΒ would be able to see a difference in their own children and troll children but unless it isΒ a mountain troll trolls look very much like us humans and actually behaves much like us too but there’s one big difference and that is that trolls have tails. I think that at least I would have seen that tail pretty early πŸ™‚

DSC_0056

DSC_0057

DSC_0058

DSC_0070

If one should notice that the child was swapped one way to get ones own child back is to threaten the troll child with spanking. No one loves its own child more than a troll mother and she would know as soon as the threat came and quickly swap the children again. A troll is never cruel to its children and no matter how nice that home was they would never allow anything bad to happen to them. But more about troll in a later post.

Today has been quite wonderful but rather cold. I woke up to a world covered in frost and we went out before the sun even was close to rising above the horizon. I wanted to be sure to see the sunrise so we started by walking in to the village this morning too, only because I knew there would be no hunters in the forest today. I had brought the old Edixa with me too but half way home it was so co,d that the old camera froze and wouldn’t work πŸ™‚ So we went home, left that one and brought the analog Nikon instead and that one worked perfectly. So off to the forest and creek we went. It didn’t get especially cold during the night but cold enough to give a thin layer of frost on everything outside. I was just on my way to the forest when the hunters suddenly started to turn up, so I had to walk in to the village instead. Can’t even pretend I didn’t mind and I think the hunter I talked to noticed that very well πŸ™‚ I don’t mind walking in the village but I never let these two dogs walk without being leashed there just in case we would meet anyone who is afraid of dogs.

Sune gets so happy that he shouts out loud when that happens πŸ™‚ I don’t know why people with dogs here in the countryside don’t allow their dogs to greet other dogs but that’s how it is here.

The sun has been shining all day and it has been almost totally wind free too and that’s why I don’t mind if it gets colder because then the wind usually blows elsewhere. We did go out on the fields too but had to walk back the same way to get home so we wouldn’t risk to be shot and shoot they did a lot so I guess they were hunting wild hogs today. Later we walked out on another field and I brought the old Edixa with me. I think that camera might be my favorite one of all the old ones. She wanted to go the other way all the time and I guess lots of wild hogs might have taken refuge on the other side of the creek where they didn’t hunt. I didn’t feel a lot of smell from hogs but it was there. I guess that if the wind had blown I would have felt it better. Still, no sight of any animals today, wild or tame except for the usual horses of course πŸ™‚

It is time to make something to eat for both me and all the animals. The sun has already set (today the sun rose at 8:44 am and set at 3:15 pm. Thankfully it’s only ten more days and then it’ll turn towards longer days again even if it will take time until I actually notice anything πŸ™‚ ) and it will get dark very fast now. The fire is burning in the wood stove, the night will get cold and tomorrow might start with some fog before the sun forces it to move away again.

It is only a second between this photo and the next but I have no idea why this one got so bright inthe middle. It is like the sun had sent an extra strong ray that reached the earth at that moment :-)

Have a great day!

Kind of useless fog.

DSC_0021 (6)

We didn’t get any frost last night and the fog we got was sort of a waste to be honest. It was more like a bit thicker haze and only made everything look grey and dull, all colors were dampened. The hunters arrived early too so we couldn’t take a walk in the forest either which annoyed me a bit.

Todays fog was kind of useless, it just dampened all the colors.

I tried to take photos of the night sky last night and scared my neighbor when I suddenly started to talk to her when she went out into her garden, I had turned of all my lights so she couldn’t see me and I thought it would be a good idea to tell her I was out there πŸ™‚ I think it was better to do that than that she would start to wonder what was moving around in my garden making quiet but odd sounds πŸ™‚

But all photos came out rather blurry, the tele-photo lens is heavy enough for both my tripods to start moving slightly, I had the shutter open for 30 seconds. So tonight I’ll go outside again but with a much smaller lens and try it again and hope for the best.

It looks like the sun finally is breaking through the clouds and they have predicted a sunny afternoon so I hope they’re right for once. I really need to vacuum this place and to scrub the floors too but that can wait until tomorrow, I just don’t have the energy to do it now even if I have had a rather nice nap πŸ™‚

I could of course go outside to the wood shed to chop some fire wood but I think I rather make some tea and see if there’s anything on tv or take another walk with the dogs πŸ™‚

We were lucky not to meet any of them.

Todays photos are a mix from yesterday and today.

The hunters were out in the forest today again and will most likely be out there the entire week. Most hunters take a week’s vacation when the moose hunting season starts so even if they already might have shot what they are allowed to they have nothing else to do so they’ll most likely go out there anyway πŸ™‚

We walked in to the village yesterday and I really didn’t want to walk there again, so instead of walking on the road where they had put up signs we walked in the big cow pasture beside it. The problem was that I had no idea if the cows might be in that part of the pasture or not πŸ™‚ It is not a good Β thing to meet a cow with a calf if one is walking there with dogs.

But I figured that if we would see any cows and calves I would have time to toss the dogs over to the pasture on the other side of the fence, the cows would have no interest in me so I would be able to walk on one side of the fence and the dogs on the other. The cows know very well how the electric fence works so they would understand that the dogs would be no threat to their calves.

We were however lucky and didn’t meet any animal until we were on Β our way out of the pasture and the one we met was a calf without its mother hanging around. It has been a nice day today but now deep grey clouds hang above our heads. There’s no rain predicted but even I can see that the nature now need rain, it is so dry that even the mushroom dries out and dwindles.

It was easiest to walk where the cows walks mostly. That also meant that I walked in lots of cow dung :-)

It is time for something to eat and a pot of cocoa. No need for a fire in the stove today and by looking at the predictions it won’t be necessary for some days more.
