Yesterday I was going to watch the football match between Iceland and England. England has always been my favorite team but in the Icelandic team seven of them play in our top division at the moment and five more have been here too and not to forget, their coach is Swedish. So I had a bit of a problem on what team I should hope to win.

I fell asleep in front of the tv five minutes before they started and woke up 25 minutes in to the match. I read England 1 Iceland 2 and thought I must still be sleeping, so many goals in just 25 minutes can’t be possible. It was πŸ™‚ I was so confused that I decided it was best to go to bed πŸ™‚ I’m sad for the English team but so happy for the Icelandic πŸ™‚ Now I hope they go all the way πŸ™‚

Midsummer’s eve.

Troll butter.

Today we celebrate Midsummer’s eve here in Sweden, a holiday as big as Christmas over here. The traditions go way back and the christian church did of course do what it could to make it a truly christian holiday and one could say they failed miserably πŸ™‚ They made tomorrow John the Baptist day since it is 6 months before Christmas day so that sort of fits rather well. If You ask anyone today when John the Baptist’s day is I’m pretty very few would be able to say the right day. For some reason we Swedes always celebrate the eve, never the actual day πŸ™‚ Tomorrow will be a day to cure hangovers for many people and in nine months lots of kids will be born πŸ™‚

The Midsummer pole, some also call it the may pole but in this case the swedish word for may doesn’t mean the month but to dress, is dressed with leafy twigs and flowers. Some say that tradition is very old others that it came from Germany in the early middle ages, what we do know however is that back in the days they had huge bonfires but to be honest, it is not so wise to have if the summer is dry, who knows how well that fire will spread with some help from the wind πŸ™‚ Anyway, the midsummer pole is dressed and risen early in the day and later in the day people will start dancing around it. My favorite song is the little frogs and it is quite fun to see grown up jump like little frogs around the pole πŸ™‚ Another favorite is of course the priest’s little crow who drove a car by himself and we all know that is a pretty difficult task for a crow so he slides here and there until he ends up in the ditch and of course that’s what all dancing will do too πŸ™‚

It doesn’t take a lot of dirty imagination to see what the midsummer pole really is πŸ™‚ and lots of magic is connected to it. The pole is usually made as a big cross and at the end of each side of the cross hang wreaths, those wreaths were important to save because when winter arrived it was important to put in the bath, that would keep You healthy for the rest of the winter and that was very important since they didn’t have any antibiotics. Even though the night is very short here at this time of year it still was important to keep ones eyes open just in case any of the beings we have here would come too close. They were especially active this coming night. A common troll was no big problem, it seems they usually were good friends with humans (and no our trolls don’t burst if the sun hits them or become stone. They also look very much like us with the exception of the long fury tail). A mountain troll however is a nasty piece of work and they would most likely kidnap any human getting to close. They are however easy to see because of their size and they are also rather ugly).

This is how normal trolls look like here. The painter was John Bauer and this painting comes from the boom series Amongst gnomes and trolls. This is about a changeling, the troll mother (to the left) wanted of course the best for her daughter so she swapped babies with a queen. Her daughter was anything but nice though πŸ™‚

This however is a Mountain troll, shrewdΒ but not too intelligent. This is also a John Bauer painting.

Young girls had their best chance of knowing who they would marry this night. They had to, totally quiet until they fell asleep, pass seven (or nine depending on where one lived) fences and pick seven (or nine) flowers to put under their pillow. If they managed to do that they would dream of their husband to be. One way to make sure one would be healthy all year long was to roll around in the midsummer’s morning dew, naked of course. The dew had lots of magical powers so people collected it too in empty jars just in case someone got seriously ill. This was of course the night it was important to collect as much healing herbs as possible, preferable with lots of dew on them. In some places they drank spring. They had beforehand cleaned out a spring in the forest or where ever it might be and during the night they went to the spring and drank the water, that would also secure good health they thought. Naturally that could be a problem because of the spring nymph. If they didn’t sacrifice to the nymph the effect would be quite the opposite.

I woke up at 2 am last night while almost successfully trying to cough up my lungs over the bed. My throat had been so swollen for a few das that if affected my ears but suddenly I could feel the swelling get smaller, I got my hearing back again πŸ™‚ and my fever vanished and has stayed away all day! I still have that nasty coughing and I’m pretty sure it will stay for at least a few days more. I would feel alive again if it not had been for the rather high temperature outside together with over 95% humidity. It feels like I’m walking in a steam bath πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ An hour ago they predicted rain and thunderstorms but now they say mostly sunny and no thunder at all πŸ™‚ I don’t care because I’ll most likely just sit on my sofa doing nothing. The beekeepers wanted me to come over but I don’t have any energy to do anything πŸ™‚

I’m not sure which is worse, the fever with boiling/ freezing periods or the coughing with runny nose πŸ™‚ I’ve started coughing so bad that every single muscle, even those tiny in the scalp aches after one of those cough attacks and the runny nose isn’t especially fun to have either πŸ™‚

I didn’t get many hours of sleep last night and the few I got wasn’t any quality sleeping πŸ™‚ The coughing makes the sore throat even more so so every tim I tried to swallow the pain hit the brain and woke me up. I’ve spent the morning watching the film Avengers Age Of Ultron. A perfect film to watch when the brain no longer works πŸ™‚ The logical center in the brain doesn’t work anyway so nothing seems impossible to do πŸ™‚ There isn’t even anything odd having a Norse god as one of the main characters πŸ™‚

As I said yesterday, the evil guy in films like these must be truly evil, not a philosophical mumbo-jumbo character but heroes can be very different, they don’t even have to be good ones for us to accept them. In the Avengers films I don’t think there’s really a single good one, except for possibly Captain America, the rest of them are more or less unstable as best πŸ™‚

The dogs are bored, I’m at home and therefore we should be outside walking all day like we do on work free days. They constantly wants me to open the door and when I don’t follow them out they go inside again sighing highly πŸ™‚ It is however not the nicest of weathers outside even if it isn’t that bad either. Yesterday I sowed the last vegetables in my vegetable patch. Red carrots, chard, broccoli and a few squash seeds. A bit late for squash but then again those plants usually give too much anyway so I think I’ll get just enough this year. I have plenty of green tomatoes but no ripe ones, we need a few days with sunshine to make them red I think.

The fever has sunken rather a lot so I hope it’ll be gone by tomorrow. It came back during the night for a while so I woke up every time I either froze or boiled and gave up at 4am and went up. That gave me plenty of time to watch dvd’s though πŸ™‚ So this morning I finally watched the last Hunger Games and the latest Star Wars. I liked them both but I have to say that Hunger Games did feel a bit slow some times but loved what happened before it ended.

They do have problems making the evil characters in the Star Wars films. Darth Vader and the emperor was really good but the young Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader was really bad and so was the bad guys in this film too. I think they tried to make then interesting but only managed to make them annoying πŸ™‚ The hero side however is really good but a good film needs a fantastic evil guy, one we all can hate and who is interesting and not someone we all want to die early in the film just because he’s so annoying, or perhaps pathetic is the right word πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I do hope they get more evil in the next film πŸ™‚

I’ve had the most wonderful morning today. I drove quite early to the hospital to get my insoles and was lucky to be the first one there. I don’t think it took more than five minutes to get them adjusted to my two pair of shoes. After that I drove to the marina, the sun was shining and there was a weak but just enough warm breeze to keep me cool. I took several photos but only with old cameras, it would have been too much with my digital too because old cameras weigh lots more than modern ones.

It was when I walked by the water I suddenly started to long for the ocean. The lake is big enough so it behaves like an ocean in most ways but there it doesn’t smell the same, no salty smell with a touch of seaweed and that smell that is so hard to describe. Small fish jumped up in the air so I think pike, walleye and perch might have been out hunting or perhaps even trout. I guess it would have been a good morning to fish so I almost regretted not bringing a fishing rod. We can fish for free in the ocean and the five big lakes here but we do need a fishing license in almost all other waters.

A rather perfect morning.

From the Gevabox.

From the Gevabox.

We’re having a rather wonderful morning here at the outskirts of the world. Sunny, warm and with a weak wind just enough cool to make it even more pleasant. Always flies in the air but still unusually few and even fewer ticks of which I’m thankful.

On the way tothe bog.

To get even further away from the world we took our morning walk out on the bog. We were actually there already yesterday afternoon because my neighbors had been there and told me it was so dry out there that it was possible to walk around without sinking anywhere. I did hesitate a while because I thought there would be lots of ticks, mosquitos and midges there but then again it is voles and mice who spreads ticks more than other animals and voles would drown if they tried to dig in the ground out there and mice stays mostly on the islands so we avoided to walk there.

I climbed up one of the hunting towers in the hope of seeing some wildlife but except for small birds I couldn’t see anything but trees and cotton-grass. To be honest it was enough for me that there were no biting insects and hardly any other flies either πŸ™‚ They all seems to have moved in to my cottage instead πŸ™‚ I really need to buy more sticky fly paper again.

We’re having a chilly, windy but mostly sunny morning here. It is sweater weather even if one walks in shelter of the wind but kind of nice anyway. It is however not that nice that I’ll keep the kitchen door open for more than a few seconds. I guess that’s why the dogs wants to go out and in all the time, when it stays open all day they usually don’t feel the need to go in and out at all πŸ™‚

The hunters have cleaned up the path along the creek so we finally can walk there without risking a fall and a broken leg. Too bad the ones owning the field beside this part now will put up electric fences to keep away the wild hogs. They keepthe fence so close to the creek that it will be impossible to walk there again.

Too bad the ones owning the field beside this part now will put up electric fences to keep away the wild hogs. They keep the fence so close to the creek that it will be impossible to walk there again. It is most likely against the law “right of public access” but I do understand them because the hogs do destroy the fields totally.

Perhaps I finally will watch one of all the dvd’s I’ve bought. I still haven’t watched the last Hunger Games movie or the latest Star Wars movie and I have continued to buy dvd’s so I have plenty to watch when I finally start :-)I also have several books that I’ve bought but not come around to read.

I turned on a radiator.

I've now used my mormors (grandmother on my mother's side) camera. It is a Gevabox that gives 8 photos on a 120 roll film. It has one speed, around 1/30th of a second and three apertures (8, 11 and 16) so it was a bit tricky to use it :-) I used a ISO 50 film. I'll show a photo per day or so and this is the first one. I really liked it but I guess I could be a bit biased since it was my mormors camera :-)

The day has been and still is rather cold and windy but the sun has shined almost all day so it has been bearable but not more.It seems to have been raining quite a lot during the night but nothing can really be seen in the creeks and there are no puddles around that would be great mosquito nurseries either. My water barrels however are full again.

It even got so cold and with high humidity yesterday that I turned on a radiator in the livingroom and I did close all windows too. If the wind calms down I can turn off the radiator again tomorrow and open up the windows too I think because they have changed the predictions to much nicer weather than they did just a day ago. We’ll get sunshine again and the temperature will rise to the high 16C (60,8F). It does look like all my plants survived the frost night the other day and without damages too πŸ™‚

I’m so tired today but I don’t know why, usually this cold weather does the opposite to me. I fell asleep in front of the tv as soon as we had come home from our walk πŸ™‚ If it hadn’t been for the flies annoying me I would most likely have been asleep yet πŸ™‚ I guess it could be because Nova has kept on waking me up at 4am every morning this week. I would most likely have woken up shortly after that time anyway but it is something else to be woken up with the help from someone else. Today however she didn’t, this time it was the alarm and that felt even worse πŸ™‚

The one I buy all my film from sometimes sell packages with mixed films, black and white but with different ISO's. This is a roll with ISO 3200 so it is very light sensitive, nothing to be used on a sunny and bright day so guess if I felt lucky that morning we got that really thick fog :-) I still had a few photos left to take so I took them another early morning before the sun had risen too high. So here are three photos taken with my Hasselblad.

I’m sort of lazy when it comes to shaving so long periods I have the right style with a hipster beard πŸ™‚ Yesterday I thought it was time to get rid of it and brought out my trimmer. I stood in the bathroom and trimmed away when the machine, wich has a cord, started to hack. I didn’t think much of it but tried to keep the cord in a way that it at least would work until I was finished.

Suddenly big flames came out of the machine! I shouted something like AAAAAH in a high-pitched voice and was about to toss it in the sink but realised that would be a rather stupid idea since I had a newspaper there to collect all the hair, that would have been a smelly start of a nice fire πŸ™‚ So I dropped it on the floor, still burning and tore out the cord from the jacket but the bl…. thing kept on burning πŸ™‚ So I ran out to the kitchen and tossed it in that sink instead. I tossed it in a clay pot and placed it in the garden during the night πŸ™‚ I looked slightly derange in my face, some places had still lots of beard left and it was a bit tricky to shave it all off πŸ™‚

My printer hate me too! We’re going to have our annual road association meeting so I was going to print out the calling to the meeting and also last years protocol. I had bought black ink this year since it refused to print out anything no matter what color I chose as long as there was no black print. So I was printing out the calling when I noticed that the text was clear blue! I know I had adjusted the printer for black text but still there it was in clear blue πŸ™‚ As soon as all calling notes had been printed the printer told me I had no blue ink left. No problems I thought, I’ll get the protocol in black so I don’t need blue.

Of course I needed blue, it refused to print anything in black as long as I didn’t have blue print! So away to FalkΓΆping I went and bought blue print and when I came back it didn’t fit! I had of course tossed away the old cassette, which by the way had just enough blue ink in it to color my both hand very blue. So back to the store minutes before they closed and I just bought a cassette which I thought looked the same and to my big surprise it was the right kind. So finally I could print the protocol. Guess if I got surprised that every letter it printed just had the edges in black, inside it was totally white?!

It didn’t matter what I did it continued in the same way. I now have the protocol and the text is purple and I have given up πŸ™‚ I truly hate printers but I need one and every year it is the same battle and the printer always win πŸ™‚

It was actually really, really nice but I did wear a fleece jacket. The sun warms us up but the shadows are a tad cold for quite some time. We still have very low humidity so no morning dew today either. That however means the ticks won’t be around either so even if I miss the dew I really like the tick situation πŸ™‚ Not many other animals around either to be honest but the ravens had a huge fight with something, they were so noisy that they could be heard all over the village.

I noticed the pain yesterday evening and thought that it would be gone this morning but it got worse instead. I can move it and it gets a bit better if I continue to move it every now and again but as soon as I keep it still for a few minutes it’s the same again. This is not a week to not being able to work because I’m the only painter who will be there all week. Lots of school graduations next week too. I must go to the super market today. I really need mosquito nets and I’ll see if I can find a small fan too, just in case the heat returns. We all fear that this was the summer we’ll get this year. Last year started out much the same (less hot though) and as soon as our vacations started the cold and rainy weather came to stay. Looking at it statistically if May is hot June will be cool and July hot. Almost always a lot of rain though because the summer months here are also the ones with most water falling from the sky. Climate change however has changed things so now the weather turns anywhere all the time πŸ™‚

She had sown this one six months ago and I think I’ll have a good chance on keeping it alive. We don’t have any sunshine but it is fairly warm and low humidity makes it feel even better. The weak wind just makes it more pleasant so I really can’t complain today. One nest is so close to my gate that every time I walk out of my garden the chicks starts to scream for food πŸ™‚ I do hope it is too hard for my cats to reach it, Teodor is the one most interested in hunting birds but he is just too fat to even come close to the nest and I hope Bertil doesn’t care. The more trees and bushes I plant the faster I mow the lawn πŸ™‚ My plan is to have so many bushes that I just have paths going around the entire garden so mowing will take even shorter time. I have a problem with my frost grape though, it only produces male flowers so I never get any grapes but this year the amur grape flowers too so I have high hopes of at least get a few grapes this year πŸ™‚ I have sown more frost grape seeds though and if they germinate it’ll take around seven years until I get any flowers on those new vines πŸ™‚

This calf used the last rays from the sun to enjoy the evening to the fullest yesterday.

It was quite pleasant outside this morning, around Β 8C (46,4F) and the birds sang as loud as they could. What is quite pleasant in the morning isn’t necessarily pleasant in the afternoon, it wasn’t much warmer when I came home from work. The clouds cover the sky but they are so thin here and there that the sun can shine through them every now and again. When it does wearing a fleece jacket is too much.

It is even more dry in the ground now after the thunder showers than it was before. So there isn’t especially many flies in the forest right now but down by the creek it was on the way to become nasty, they always want to look how my ears and nostrils look from inside and I really don’t like that πŸ™‚ The good thing was that they refused to leave that area so as soon as we walked away from the creek we were fly free.

I thought I would grow melons this year so I bought the hardiest kind I could find. We call it Mango melon but I found the English name Vine peach. The instructions say to prune them heavily otherwise they will take over totally. On the net I found that they will taste best if one preserve them in syrup, they don’t taste a lot raw but then again can be used as a sweet cucumber instead πŸ™‚ I sowed a lot of seeds just to be sure I would at least get one plant, I now have at least ten growing in my kitchen window and more seeds are germinating πŸ™‚

I still haven’t figured out where I’ll plant my tiny hazelnut bushes, they will grow big soon enough so I better find the right places from the start. They now grow in pots so I can think of this all summer before I need to plant them because I also have to think about where I want to try the Shagbark hickory πŸ™‚ I really need to become rich so I can buy more land to plant all my trees πŸ™‚

It is time to feed all the animals and perhaps myself too. I bought some grilled chicken on my way home today, I’ll see if I can make something tasty with it or if I’ll wait until tomorrow to have it. It is odd, it doesn’t cost more to buy a grilled chicken than anΒ ungrilled?!

Summer has returned for an afternoon but that was something I really couldn’t believe this morning when I went ou to the cat to get something I had forgotten. There was ice all over the car! I had just woken up and was so tired that I didn’t go inside again to bring the camera πŸ™‚ It was -2C (28,4F) as coldest this morning. I have to admit it surprised me quite a lot πŸ™‚

This is how it looks by my gate. Not especially fun to walk through there after rain has fallen :-) I'll start cutting it down as soon as it doesn't flower.

Hundkex, or dog bisquits in English. A bit early this year. To be honest it might just as well be wild carrots or something else very similar but I call all of them hundkex πŸ™‚

It must have been during a very short time though because my tomato plants looks just as good as they did before. None of the weather sites had predicted this or even come anywhere near that low temperature, they all predicted 8C (46,4F). I wonder if I could have forced them to get me new tomato plants if they had died πŸ™‚ No idea to sue anything in this country, if one would win the best one can hope for is a “Good for You” and a tap on the shoulder. If one lose however one must pay the winners legal fees and all the rest.

It is odd to see all the flowers in bloom that shouldn’t flower at the same time πŸ™‚ It isn’t that strange to be honest, spring sprung already in early March here, can’t remember if that ever has happened here during my lifetime.

I must admit that I never thought this day would be as nice as it has and still is. Not much sunshine but warm and a just enough cool wind to make it even more pleasant. The morning was warm enough but the humidity made me sweat like a pig, I was stupid enough to wear a fleece jacket, it is so worn that it gives very little warmth to be honest but it still was too much.

I did the laundry and everything dried within an hour. It’s almost a pity I didn’t have more when we have this weather πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I put the potatoes in the vegetable garden while the laundry was drying and noticed that the sand closest to the flowerbed beside was bone dry, no wonder my rhubarbs grow so bad there. So I watered the vegetable garden and also those flowerbeds where I sowed annuals this early spring. Lots of them are showing already so a bit more water doesn’t hurt.

I’ll bring out all my tree tomatoes (Tamarillo) and Naranjilla plants too today, tomorrow might become one of the warmest days ever in May, they predict that it’ll be 27C (80,6F) here! ( the record is actually 32,5C (90,5F set in 1892) That is a temperature we rarely reach during hot summers here πŸ™‚ It’ll be a joy to work in the factory beside the huge oven and washing machine πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ The combination of nasty high humidity and temperature is nothing I look forward too.

I must also remember to buy sticky fly papers, yes it is the season of those little beauties πŸ™‚ The forest flies are already here to annoy me but still not that many that I feel the need to bring my mosquito hat. Lots of butterflies, bumblebees and the first big dragonfly or as we call them Troll Spindles. No hornets yet though, I do like those friendly giants.

High humidity, cloudy sky and warmish isn’t that nice to be walking in to be honest, it is the high humidity that sort of dampens the joy of being out walking. The weak wind there is doesn’t help much but the humidity has already sunken quite dramatically so it does feel better when sitting here in the kitchen with the door open. The clouds are thick but every now and again there’s a tiny rip in them allowing the sunshine to hit the ground for a few seconds at a time.

No rain is predicted for today so the grass might get a chance to dry up and I a chance to mow it. They predict some sunshine for tomorrow though so I guess I’ll get the chance then if I can’t do it today. To be honest, the predictions change just as much as always so it might end up with a hurricane instead πŸ™‚ I won’t complain too much as long as we don’t get frosty nights, I’ve started to bring plants outside for the summer so frosty nights are a no-no from now on.

We walked in some high and wet grass this morning and that is tick paradise. I picked over twenty crawling ticks from both dogs and a few that already was sitting there drinking blood. Nast creatures and they aren’t even especially popular amongst animals as food. Most birds avoid them so it seems they are here on this planet top spread diseases and death. I guess that’s important for nature too, there would be too many animals around otherwise but I still can’t pretend to think ticks are something we really need πŸ™‚

There is something special with early summer rain, it sort of brings out all the smells and scents there is and make the day better even if it is grey and dull. We’ve had that kind of rain today and it was so nice to be out walking after work even if it rained quite a lot in the beginning. The birds loved it because they sang even higher than usual. I thought it had rained quite a lot today, it looked that way when watching it but I guess the raindrops were small because the ground is just as dry as before just beneath the surface. So I guess I still can hope for a mass death amongst the fly larvae πŸ™‚ Too late for the same when it comes to mosquitos, we have plenty already and several attacked me in the forest today. I get immune towards the itching rather fast thankfully so mosquitos don’t disturb me that much to be hones even though that annoying sound they make tends to drive me slightly mad πŸ™‚

Well that is if the climate continues to give us short winters. They really don’t need to be warm but they do need to be short. The Black Walnut is slowly opening up its leafs and it is now almost six years old and perhaps 140cm (56 inches) high πŸ™‚ I feel that I might have a few trees that will grow a bit too high for my garden but at the time they will be that big I’m most likely dead and gone anyway πŸ™‚

I am however not sure I’ll keep this positive attitude towards the weather since the wind seems to get stronger. Last summer, I think it was, I bought a little machine that makes ice cream. Well that is a lie to be honest. It is two bowls that you put in the freezer until they are deep frozen and one lid with an electric mixer which rotates very, very slow. One put the batter in the deep frozen bowl, put on the lid and start the mixer. After around 5 minutes there’s something very similar to ice cream, like soft ice cream. Ona can of course make real ice cream batter but for two bowls only (one bowl is like one portion) that’s just too much work.

So instead I filled the bowl with yoghurt and it works really good. I put in a variety called Samoan which contains peach, kiwi, mango, pineapple and passionfruit juice. Normally that yoghurt is a bit too sweet but when frozen this way it becomes a bit towards sour instead, just perfect! I also bought a yoghurt with vanilla, apples and cinnamon and I’ll try that one later today. I am rarely at home when the ice cream truck comes to the village and if I don’t bring a cool bag when I’m at the grocery store any ice cream will melt before I come home so this is a pretty good solution.
