Winter.

Couldn’t be much better.

DSC_0020 (8)

The day has been a perfect springwinter day. The night was pretty chilly and they day has been sunny and reasonable warm. The weak wind has done a good job making it feel much colder though so I’ve tried to stay out of reach for it most of the time. One good thing in springwinter is that the mud still is deep frozen during the warmer days so we are always pretty clean after our walks.

Yesterday on my way home I thought I saw a crane but believed I must have seen wrong but the news says I did see right πŸ™‚ It seems all birds now think spring has sprung and not far north from here several thousand trumpet swans are resting by a lake, still not a record number but chances are big they will break it. The first Doves have arrived to the village too, it looked like it was the Stock dove (Columba oenas, here in Sweden we call it Forest dove) and not the biggerΒ  Common wood-pigeon (Columba palumbus, here we call it Ring dove since it has a white ring around its neck). I could also hear and see the first Common Buzzard.

I don’t trust the birds though, they’ve been very wrong so many times before. Some weather institute is predicting a very warm spring here and I think it is the one that predicted that we were going to get a nasty cold winter this time πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ So I guess it’s best to make sure I have plenty of fire logs and wood prepared because they always seems to get it wrong πŸ™‚ I wouldn’t complain if they were right for once and that we’ll ge a dry spring too, so all fly larvae (the biting and blood sucking ones), mosquito larvae and ticks we still have around will die. I just saw the first flies warming up on my south heading wall, even though they don’t bite I do wish the birds will take them all πŸ™‚

I should have sown the first tomato plants now but I didn’t remember it until today and now I can’t remember where I put all the different seeds I have πŸ™‚ A good thing with tomato seeds is that they seems to last forever, they just take slightly longer to germinate if they are several years old. Last year was a really good tomato year and that was still a rather crappy summer here, so I’m hoping for a warm spring and a really warm summer this year. I’m also waiting for the potatoes I’ve ordered, I’ve gotten the bill via e-mail but no signs of any potatoes yet.

Not an eventful day.

Taken with my Rolleicord (and the coming three too). I do need more light when I take film photographs.

I have to admit that I have very little to write about again. Nothing much has happened at work and here at home very little happens at all πŸ™‚ I do get a little daylight when I come home from work though and it isn’t many days left until the sun stays up long enough so I still can see it here at home when I come home after work.

This one has an odd shape for coming from the Rolleicord but the film hadn't moved as it should so I cropped it some.

The days are sunny and fairly warm now and the nights are clear and fairly cold, perfect springwinter weather. Too bad I have to work when the weather is so nice. They say however that we will get that kind of weather during the weekend too and I do hope the mornings will be just as foggy as they have been all week. I have my small Kodak with me in the car every morning so with a bit of luck they’ll be good enough to show here when the film is developed.

The fire is burning in the stove and I’ll make some cocoa and a few cheese sandwiches. My favorite cheese for the moment is a dutch? one called Maasdamer. Not strong but full of flavors and it goes with anything, especially ham. Too bad I don’t have any ham at home πŸ™‚ I do however have sliced pineapple preserved in its own juice so I’ll have that afterwards.

Nothing much has happened news-wise so I’m following the American primaries as much as I can. Both sides are veryΒ interesting to be honest but the republican is really! interesting πŸ™‚ I guess You all know that if we could vote for the American president here in Europe there would never be a republican president. Last election (according to a huge survey I can’t remember the name on) around 88% of the European population would have voted for Obama and here in Sweden I think it was over 95%. So even most of our most right wing people would vote for a president from the democratic party.

In most parts of Europe we don’t mix politics and religion and that I think is what most scares us about American politics, right wing politics that is. I think most of us thinks it is nice that You have a faith but that doesn’t mean You have the right to force Your beliefsΒ to control my life. Freedom of religion doesn’t mean the freedom of oppressing people with other believes. My personal thought is that religion should never rule the people of a country because power corrupts and who is to decide what interpretation of the religion is right?

A rather nice day.

DSC_0022 (4)

No sun today, this photo is a week old.

It has been a rather nice day so far, I worked in the neighbor factory for a few hours and when I came back to my normal work place very little was left to do so I left almost an hour early. It is odd how very nice that can feel even if I should have stopped working at noon anyway, that hour can feel like an entire day πŸ™‚

I drove to the super market on my way home, the only reason I did so was because I wanted to buy more fire logs. I must say I was a bit surprised when they didn’t have any. Instead they had real fire wood in sacks, not big but very heavy. They don’t last as long as fire logs would but it sure smells nicer when the real wood burns and I think real wood burning gives away more heat than the logs. Compressed sawdust is perhaps a bit too dense so they burn more slowly.

It was quite warm when I came home and by warm I mean above 0C (32F) and the wind wasn’t too strong so it was quite nice to be honest. We walked down to the creek to see if they had cleaned up something and the horse guy had but not much. I’m still happy that I managed to walk there without falling or breaking a leg πŸ™‚ It looks like they this time only cuts down birches and I could hear him working somewhere in the forest but not see him.

I can’t say I feel much better but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel today. I was absolutely sure I hadΒ a high fever when I woke up this morning at 4am. I didn’t wake up because of that though but the totally awful smell from the bathroom which filled the entire cottage. I would still have to get out today since I was out of toilet paper, I can live without food for a while but I can’t live without toilet paper πŸ™‚ I also wanted some sliced pineapple, the kind which is preserved in its own juice. I could of course buy a fresh one but then I would have to peel it and it’s always hard to figure out when it is just enough ripe and if it is too ripe it’s just disgusting. When I would peel it the juice would stick to everything and after all I am close to death having this cold, even if I don’t have a fever, so that’s just too much work πŸ™‚

It was cold during the night, almost -15C (5F) and the world had been colored almost totally white. What was even better was that we had a quite thick fog too and no wind at all, so our morning walk was rather pleasant and we were all painted with some frost in our hair. The sun did shine through the clouds after a while and has kept on shining more or less the entire day. It’llΒ be like this for a few days now, too bad I’ll be working all day.

This year my lime tree gave me three small limes and two days ago I harvested the first one, We all know that limes are pale yellow-greenish when we cut them open so guess if I got surprised when this first one was brightly orange πŸ™‚ I’ve never heard of a lime having orange fruit pulp and it looked rather amazing to the green outside. It tasted as it should though but the taste was stronger than I had thought it would be since it doesn’t get especially much sunlight here during the winter. My Hasselblad camera is a so-called medium format camera, the film is bigger than those to a slr camera. Medium format cameras give totally square photos and one can only take twelve photos on each film roll. For a reason I don’t know it’s much more expensive to develop those films even if it is exactly the same film as the 135 films (but bigger then), so they use the same chemicals. That’s why I use my Hasselblad camera so seldom. Instead I’ve used the Zeiss more often, it use the same kind of film but instead of totally square photos it takes slightly less wide photos so I can get 16 photos from each roll of film. I hope You can follow what I mean πŸ™‚

The film to my Hasselblad is loaded in a special cassette which when it is loaded is attached to the camera body. One day I learned that they have made film cassettes which gives the same size on the negatives as on the Zeiss camera so I can take 16 photos with my Hasselblad too! I found one on our eBay (which we call Tradera) and won the auction fairly easy. I tried to get some info about it on the net but it seems medium format fanatics doesn’t like it, the negatives should be square and that’s it πŸ™‚ I’m not a fanatic so I thought it was great and today I started using that cassette πŸ™‚ I do prefer to take many photos for less money if I can πŸ™‚

So anyway, it was quite pleasant when we started our walk, a weak wind and I could see rips in the sky showing a blue heaven. It changed quickly though and soon the snow started to fall. I have to admit that I didn’t notice it much as long as we were walking in the forest but on our way back it snowed so much sometimes that it was hard to see any longer distances. Still, the flakes are mostly small so it takes some time until it becomes especially much on the ground.

I normally take photos of this tree with its funguses but closer to the ground. I'm walking on the ridge around 15 meters (much the same in yards) up and could take a closer look at the top of the old tree. There are a few funguses gowing even higher.

DSC_0022 (2)

I think I must have had fever during the night because I woke up very sweaty and I had had the most odd dreams. I do remember the last one and I was going down a tine brook in a gigantic wooden ship. I’m not quite sure how that ship could go anywhere because from what I remember it was bigger than the brook. Anyway, I sat there on the ship fishing when I noticed people standing beside the brook laughed at me because I had the wrong kind of fishing rod πŸ™‚

I realised they were right so I turned around the big ship (all by myself, no one else where on the ship with me) and started to go upstream to get the right kind of fishing rod. When I did the ship started to sink but for some reason that didn’t bother me at all, I even could breathe under water and the world down there was much bigger, it was like an ocean. Suddenly I realise that I’m about to go straight into the painting box I have at work and the panic hit me when I realised that I most likely would break the painting guns.

I’m not sure how this huge ship would not break the entire box, which wasn’t bigger in the dream than in reality πŸ™‚ but it seemed to fit rather well in the opening of the box Suddenly the view got clearer and I realised it was the robot who was painting and he bowed and just stepped to the side and then I woke up πŸ™‚ All day I’ve been wondering how it works with powder paint and water but it did look just right in the dream πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I do know where the robot comes from (no we don’t have any robots at work even if it would be a good thing). I watched a science program where they had robots who played soccer, the robot had to learn bu itself what the ball was and what it should so with it. Even I would have been fantastic compared to those robots πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Yes they did cut down trees on the other side of the creek too and it was almost impossible to walk there at all. I didn't realise that untilit was too late. The influenza has hit my work place now, several are sick or has been. I think it is the swine flu but they say three different kinds are roaming around in the country. I had the swine flu last time it was here and therefore I should be safe from getting it again. It didn’t hit hard when it did though and it only lasted for a few days. Some people get so sick that they die when they get it, others, like me barely notice it.

Can’t say much has happened, it rained a lot during the day but it was still very bright outside. Not so when I drove home after work though. The sky was covered in dark grey clouds and they just refused to let any of the last light for the day pass through.

I got a letter with an appointment for my annual vehicle inspection today. A bit early I think since I don’t have to do it until the last of September πŸ™‚ It’s not as if I love going there so I always wait until the last day if possible. Strange that they send that one now since I during all the years I’ve gone to the same place never had my car inspected early in the year πŸ™‚ I’ll make an appointment later myself.

We’ve had a rather nice day here, at least until around 1pm when the clouds finally put an end to the sun shining. It is still quite warm though and if one can stay out of winds range it still is quite nice out there. Rain will arrive in a few hours though and it will rain on and off the coming days.

The birds seem to think spring has sprung, the different Tits have sung for over a week now but today the Woodpeckers started too. I think it was the Green Woodpecker but it could have been the Black Woodpecker too. No drumroll from them yet though, I guess they won’t start with that until the days are much longer. I even saw what I think was spider webs this morning and I do hope the spiders will survive if the temperature drops drastically again.

The Swedish heats of the Eurovision Song Contest started yesterday and I have to say that the quality was as low as always πŸ™‚ They put in one or two songs that we all know will go on to the big finale and the rest is just crap which they use to fill the program πŸ™‚ This time they actually had a few singers who didn’t sing desperately out of tune πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ This competition is a rather expensive thing to do and we did win the big finale last year so we’ll host it this year. The weather is sort of sad today. The sky is grey and we have the occasional wind gusts that shake the cottage but almost no wind in between, a bit hazy perhaps. The weather sort of gives the feeling that it has given up and really don’t know what it wants πŸ™‚ It doesn’t even rain as they had predicted. That doesn’t mean the morning walk was bad,on the contrary. Very few people were outside, the only ones I actually saw sat in cars driving away from the village. It’s rather warm too so I didn’t need to wear a sweater beneath the jacket, to be honest I think it would have been enough with a thick sweater or perhaps a sweater and a fleece jacket.

I wasn’t sure if they would be working in the forest today so we walked to the little lake where we were the last week. The dogs were following some tracks I couldn’t see and was very interested in an open field where I guess both moose, deer and wild hogs walk around when it is dark. It used to be a part of the forest but all trees must have been cut down a few years ago. The dead grass is so high there so I couldn’t see if they had planted new tree yet. The law says they must and very few down here in the southern parts of Sweden dares not to. It’s another thing further north where fewer people live, people from the bigger cities buy a piece of land, cuts down the trees and leave with the money.

Suddenly there's a deciduous tree in the middle of the deep spruce forest. I guess it's just a matter of time until they cut down all these trees too.

DSC_0020

We’ve had a cold and sunny day here today, even after I had come home from work. Normally the sun is behind clouds when we get out on our walk but today it showed itself several times even if it was just for a few minutes at a time. No wind what so ever so I would have loved the weather anyway πŸ™‚ It was so cold that in places where the sun couldn’t reach there still was frost on all the plants.

Tomorrow we’ll be back to warmer weather again (not much warmer though but above 0C (32F) ) and with it both rain and snow will fall they say. We’ll have some semi strong winds too but not as bad as it was last time. To be honest, I didn’t notice the wind much last time since it was stopped by both my neighbors cottage, garage and the forest, I actually barely could hear it most of the time.

We went down to the creek like always after work on Fridays and before we reached the forest I understood something was wrong, I could see something looking like a tractor and that’s never good news. I was right, they were cutting down trees just beside the path we walk on and most of the trees growing by the creek too. If I would think like a forest owner I would say it was about time they did something to that area, the trees grew so close together that they never would reach any bigger heights.

Never a good sign to see a working machine there, the only way it can come from is from the other side of the forest.

Well, I’m not a forest owner so I mostly felt a bit sad to see what they were doing. Now it is not all bad because this will help all spring flowers that grew by that creek. In a year or so the ground will be covered with violets and white wood anemones. It will look amazing and I’m pretty sure the ferns will gain from this too, just imagine how wonderful it will look when all those ferns lean over the water! Β Still I’ll miss the shade the trees gave and I guess one of the fly free zones now are gone for years to come. Unfortunately this will not affect the tics at all and they are plenty down by the creek.

We’ve had a wonderful sunny day here with very little wind as well. I got the chance to experience it some when I walked to and from the neighbor factory where I worked for a few hours today. It was the kind of day when it felt like the best thing to do was just to jump in the car and drive away but I couldn’t for two reasons.

A19054_015A

A19054_017A

A19054_023A

A19054_024A

The first reason was because too many hadn’t come to work today so they really needed another painter and the second reason was that I had to replace the two lights above the license plate on the tailgate. I knew both of them had broken already yesterday so the first thing I did when I came home was to bring all screwdrivers I have, the two tiny lightbulbs were already waiting in the car.

All photos I took with the Kodak Retinette became really grainy and I think it has to do with really bad light. Next time I'll use it will be on a sunny day. These four and the four after are taken with the Kodak.

I had to have the flashlight in my mouth while I kept the tailgate in a hight where I easily could work. Naturally the screws were of a kind which I didn’t have a screwdriver for. So I talked with the handyman at work, he who fixes all problems we have with almost everything at work and he had the right tool. So as soon as I came back to work I started changing those lightbulbs.

I do like them anyway.

A19055_017A

The first thing I do is to drop the tiny screw so it landed between the license plate and the tailgate. I could feel that it would be easy to pick up so I continued with the other one. It is amazing how hard those tiny bulbs sit and there’s really no space for short and chubby fingers πŸ™‚ I did get it out after a while and when I was about to pick up the screw that I dropped I managed to push it down behind the license plate.

The plate is made of plastic but I didn’t dare pulling too hard to get the screw out, so I gave up after a few minutes and called our handyman and asked how I would remove the plate since there were no visible screws to remove. He really tried to explain to me but in the end he had to come out and help me πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Turns out those plastic plates can take a lot before they break and to be honest, it was stupidly easy to remove it πŸ™‚

I went out to the car this morning, expecting the wind to roar and howl but it was actually quite quiet. I think we’ve gotten enough rain to last us the year out by now, thankfully it will stop some time tonight, after that the temperature will drop below 0C (32F) and it will turn to snow instead. Β After that we might get some sunshine but cold temperatures and those will stay for a few days when warmer weather will come back again. I really think it could decide itself to stay either warm or cold for a longer period, this is just stupid.

Today actually passed rather quick and I’m surprised since Tuesdays usually are slower than cold molasses. Still nothing special happened but I didn’t get the chance to watch the clock especially much and that usually helps to make the day go by faster. No hunters out today but I got a bit confused when I suddenly heard a shot. Another problem with strong winds is that it can bring sound so good that something happening far away will sound as if it was fairly close. Even though the sound was pretty loud it still had a kind of dampened sound so I figured that the hunter must be pretty far away anyway. The ditch that is supposed to take all the melted water has seen better days, it got a bit destroyed when they put down the sewer system last year. So I could see some ice by the gate and also a lot of water.

I managed to get down to the gate without slipping to my big surprise Β but I stood on the wrong side of the gate, the hasp to open it up was on the other side. So I took one step out into the ice and water. I felt how my foot lowly started to slide away all by itself and when I tried to stand more on my other foot it too started to wander away by its own accord.

Everything happened in slow motion, I desperately tried to get a good grip on the gate but nothing helped as I slowly, slowly slid down into the water back first πŸ™‚ It was so ridiculous that I just lay there on my back in the water laughing out loud as the water, rather cold I can tell You, worked its way in towards my body πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I had to roll around to be able to get up whileΒ the water was running down my legs.

I was thinking about going inside again and change clothes but decided that I just as well could drive to work because who knows if this had happened again the next time I reached the gate? It took a few hours but I did finally dry up πŸ™‚

It is rather warm outside and the snow is melting rather fast, the only problem I have with that is that the roads in the village get so Icy that it is hard to walk here. I almost slid by my mailbox when I came home πŸ™‚

The bigger roads however were really good and thank g for that because it was so thick fog that I hardly could see the road sometimes. So once again I must admit that they were right in the weather predictions!! That can actually be a sign of the end of the world as we know it πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
